Ypsopump - CamAPS FX and Libre 3 sensor

This is a bit of an awkward question, but thought I'd ask in case anyone familiar with the CamAPS FX app and the Libre 3 sensors can shed some light on this.

First time insulin pump user here. Today, I officially started my Ypsopump training and have got my pump up and running. During the training session, the instructor told us to put on an unopened Libre 3 as part of the setup to have it activated with the CamAPS FX app. I was a bit apprehensive about doing this; this is the first time I've used the Libre 3 (formerly a Libre 2 Plus user) and I prefer to put my sensors on the day before at a specific time to give it time to 'bed in'. It helps with accuracy for me. But I did it anyway, knowing I was still wearing my last Libre 2 Plus sensor and could defer to that for comparison along with my meter if I was concerned with the readings. I was also told not to download the Libre 3 app by the instructor; something about issues with connectivity being pulled away from the pump (presumably the Bluetooth).

It's been about six hours since I activated the Libre 3 sensor and its readings in the CamAPS FX app already have me concerned. Libre 3 is currently reading 2 - 3mmol lower than both my Libre 2 Plus and my meter, which are within 1 -1.5mmol difference of each other. I did anticipate this. I've had enough experience with the Libre sensors by now to gauge that it can take up to 48 hours for me to get stable-ish readings. And I know there's going to be discrepancies between the 2 Plus and the 3 anyways. But my lack of experience with these sensors and the CamAPS FX app is making me wonder if I should be more concerned by the discrepancies, especially because it doesn't seem like the Libre 3 is trying to catch up yet.

Should I be concerned about the Libre 3 sensor readings in the CamAPS FX app at this stage? My GP only supplied me two Libre 3 sensors, so I can switch to another one on short notice if needs be. Or is it just a case of waiting it out for two days to give the sensor more time to settle? Being a new pump user, I'm conscious of the pump figuring out its algorithm and don't want to mess around with anything too much. If anybody can let me know if this is normal, I'd be very grateful.

Sorry, please can I check two things.

As far as I'm aware, in the United Kingdom Freestyle Libre 3 sensors were discontinued by Abbott in 2025. Aren't you using a Freestyle Libre 3 Plus CGM?

Secondly, as far as I'm aware all Libre CGMs have to be scanned using NFC to start the warm-up process. The Freestyle Libre 3 and Freestyle Libre 3 Plus follow the same 'scan to initiate the sensor' process. So my understanding has always been that users of Abbott's CGMs can always pre-soaked their sensors before they start the warm-up process. Is that not correct for the Libre sensor you are using?

- you usually attach a new sensor 24 hours before activating. Because you were in a group training session you went along with what the trainer was telling you to do. Now you are getting readings, the sensor is 3 mmol under your capillary blood tests and the pre existing libre 2 plus. So you are asking if that will affect things on your pump. Hope that’s a fair summary?

I went onto an omnipod 5 in February with a libre 2 plus and like you, I can get big discrepancies. I’ve had this problem only twice since then.

Obviously if the sensor is reading under what you are, it thinks you are lower and so will curtail or suspend basal insulin on a closed loop system. I think this is what you are concerned about?

The very first thing to do from experience is check for ketones and keep an eye on them. If they are higher than you would expect I would contact your team for advice.

All I can say (because we can’t give instructions on here for obvious reasons), is I had the exact same issue last week. My new libre 2 was 3 to 4 mmol under my capillary test. My ketones rose modestly but still had me concerned. So I had to switch modes to manual on my pump so I could override the insulin suspension it had me on so I could sort out my glucose levels and eradicate the ketones whilst I was initiating another sensor. As unluck would have it, the same thing happened with the new sensor so I had to repeat the process again. (Abbott replaced both sensors)

With your usual one to one and a half variability , it’s frustrating but not normally such a detriment but I would say that 3mmol might make a difference and as a new pump wearer you need to be aware of how quickly ketones can creep up on you due to issues like these because you don’t have the safety net of long acting insulin any more.

They unfortunately don’t cover things like this on the training but as we all know, some of us get discrepancies with the libre accuracy so I just think it’s something to be switched on to.

I’m sure you specific contact in your team would be able to help further if needed.

It does say 'Libre 3 Plus' on the boxes I was supplied, yes. My mistake. I wasn't aware Libre 3 had been discontinued and up until this point, all the medical staff and pump instructors I've interacted with keep referring to it as 'Libre 3'. Including the CamAPS FX app. That was miscommunication on my side.

I have no idea what an NFC is. I'm presuming you're referring to the Libre apps; LibreLink, etc. In which case, yes, Libre 3 and 3 Plus do work in the same way re scanning and such. But during my pump training yesterday, the instructor had us use the CamAPS FX app to scan the sensor and activate the 1 hour warm-up process instead. Prior to the session, I was told to bring an unopened Libre 3 Plus sensor with me, so I wasn't allowed to put it on the day before activating it (which is what I typically do with the Libre 2 Plus). And during the session, as we were putting them on, another participant asked the instructor if we needed to download the Freestyle Libre 3 app for this sensor, and they told them 'no', explaining that the Libre 3 app would take connectivity away from the pump app. I still have LibreLink on my phone and am running through my last Libre 2 Plus sensor, but the Libre 3 Plus sensor was activated via CamAPS FX, so I'm only getting readings for it in that app.

Yes, my main concern was how the Libre 3 Plus was going to affect the pump's distribution of my insulin. I wasn't too worried about ketones, because I was formerly on Tresiba and only stopped taking my doses on Monday evening, so I still have some background insulin on board for a couple more days to tide me over if needs be. But it was still concerning because the difference in variation meant my readings going into the good ranges could potentially activate the pump's 'fail safe' and there's no way for me to calibrate the Libre sensors on the CamAPS FX app.

Fortunately, it looks like things have settled now. Right before I went to bed, the Libre 2 Plus and 3 Plus readings started to align closer together and have since stayed within 1mmol of each other. And when I checked my levels this morning on my meter, 3 Plus and finger prick were just over 1mmol as well. So, I think 3 Plus has finally settled. Because the instructor told us prior to the session that we had to bring an unopened sensor with us, I was a little miffed I couldn't put it on at another time so it had time to settle into my arm. But I won't be doing that again when I have to switch to a new sensor. It is frustrating they don't take into account that the 60 minute warmup doesn't work for everyone, but oh well...

Thank you for the advice, though. For now, I've been instructed to focus on logging in my meals/hypo treatment/infusion set changes whilst I adjust to the pump. But I do have written advice for ketones and other things given to me by my diabetic team if needed. I've felt fine so far, though. It's all just about trying to wrap my head around this right now.

Good luck with everything. It’s the best thing I ever did. Still early days for me at the six month mark, but it’s been SO worth it.

Where NFC is on your phone

iPhones: Built into the very top edge of the back cover.

Android phones: Located near the center or upper-middle of the back cover.

How It Scans a Libre Sensor
Powers it: Your phone sends a tiny wireless pulse that powers up the sensor (which has no main battery).

Reads it: The sensor instantly sends back your glucose data.

Displays it: Your phone beeps and shows your current glucose reading.
