    Sharp disposal

Surely you can drop them in at your local hospital? I am sure many people discretely dispose of them in their local waste. Although the actual details are far from clear, it would appear that that is not an actual offence if not hazardous, and they would surely only be classified as hazardous...

    Sharp disposal

When I took my box of sharps back to my local GP surgery this last week I was told that they have stopped taking them. Apparently this operation is carried out by my local council. The receptionist informed me that councils now have the responsibility, not the GP. The surgery duly issued me...

    Letter for airport security

We have a good example of different practices running along different guidelines. That is the airlines, the airport security, hospitals and GPs. Regarding the airlines and the airport securities - they make the rules up as they go along. It depends on who you are, where you are boarding, and...

odd readings on Accu Check Mobile

I use an Accu-Chek. It is great, and seems accurate. It has an integrated blood lancet device - which takes cassettes of 6 test lancets. My meter takes cartridges of 50 test capability. I have some points that are worth airing. The meter plays up sometimes - and give funny messages. I have...

Gym Referral Schemes and lying on forms

The inconsistencies are trying. For me - I was using my council gym/swim pool - particularly pilates, swimming and zumba. I then realised if I joined on a pay by month, then my sessions would be much cheaper. However, that meant I needed to be gym assessed - gym was part of the membership deal...

Type 1 Type 2 - can they be more positively distinguished?

I have insulin dependent diabetes, which I have had for 45 years. Recent advert campaigns are making the public aware of Type 2 diabetes, and I understand that many people are heading towards this condition due to liftestyle choices - like being overweight. The trouble I see is that many...

DVLA Petition- Action for Diabetic Drivers

I do not believe this is EU legislation. I lived in Holland for several years, and even though diabetic was given a valid driving licence - through the Town Hall - valid until I reached 70. I had two hypos, and was under the local hospital, and did not get a letter revoking my driving licence...

    Sugar free drinks

My wife used to work as a Sign Language interpreter in California, and worked freelance - often employed by the government. One of the jobs she did was with the Park Rangers, and she told me about a interesting session that she worked at. The lecturer told the audience about a serious chemical...

    Dr. changed my needles

Can you put the original outer shell back on to protect against the needle exposure? I ask because I think about disposal of the needles. At home, no problem. But when I go away, then I put the used needles into a temporary case - small box &etc, and dispose of them on return. The NHS needle...

Blood sugar and response post hypo

I have been monitoring myself fairly well for a while now. I have found something which seems odd. I am happy with my blood sugars between 4.2 and 8, preferably in the mid of those values - 5.5 to 6.0. When I have a hypo I get the horrible symptoms - confusion, sweats, anxiety and trembles...

Diet decisions NOT based on diabetes

I am happy for all of you who can buy expensive food, and eat it on beautiful plates. I think many people have big difficulties in finding food on their budgets. Fortunately there are food banks - but these seem to be extremely busy and well used. I also suspect that if you are hungry - and I...

Diet decisions NOT based on diabetes

I will not eat Halal - I think the slaughter carried out is barbaric, and I dislike thinking that animals should be badly treated.

20 years of type 1 getting desperate

I have had similar problems. I do not think there is a simple solution/answer, but I was helped by looking into: more care in rotating my insulin sites. I tend to feel comfortable with a few areas, which then build up areas of hard tissue, which reduces the absorption of the insulin. Not to...

What are some of the best ways to tell people you're diabetic?

I think this is a difficult one. We understand the issues, and the problems. Not everyone understands. And it is difficult to explain to people - <<Yes, I need to eat carefully, and try to avoid sugar.>> <<mmmmh...and why you scoffing jelly babies now then?>> <<Oh, sometimes I need to eat...

How many test strips do you use a month?

I test regularly - and certainly before I drive, and every hour or so while driving. That is the rule laid down by the DVLC. I also check before each meal. I take insulin before each meal, and need to know how much to use. I use 1 unit for each 1 CP, and if running high use an extra top up...

    Is this right?

I think that this is really scarey. It may be worth talking to your diabetic care team and get advice. She cannot throw your medicines and test kit away - that is bullying, and extremely dangerous. Your diabetic team may wish you to bring your mother into the clinic, and talk to her. Good luck.

Blood glucose meters which are the best?

I agree - the Accu-Chek Mobile is great. It takes cartridges of 50 tests, but you need to plan to have enough. I love the blood lancet pen that attaches to the meter. That takes cassettes of 6 sharps, which are sealed in to a cylindrical unit. Because it attaches to the meter the lancet and...

New Type 2 - why me?

Ask them to give you an HbAlc test. If the value of that is greater than 8 then you need to look out! What the nurse told you about 5-7 is correct. Getting there is hard!!!! But that is what the doctor and dietician are for. Good luck!

What causes Diabetes, type 1 and 2..

I think that if there was a definitive answer to what causes diabetes then the medical profession would be delighted. What is known is that the working and production of insulin is at falult. That is certainly the case in IDS or Type 1. Some research suggests that this may be due to viral...

    Food CHO portion inconsistencies

Since attending the Dafne course I have made a real effort to monitor my CHO/insulin regime. I have bought scales, have a good meter, and use the Dafne Carbohydrate Portion list. I was astounded to find that the value for raw potato in the book was 1.5 CP per 100g (1 CP = 10g CHO), whereas a...
