Just been diagnosed with fatty liver. I am type 2 diabetes. Was very surprised at the diagnosis as I am not overweight. Having difficulty at the moment controlling sugar levels. I eat a good diet low in carbs and exercise regularly. I take synjardy. Don’t know where to go from here. I’m sure the doctor will put me on another medicine which now with a fatty liver may not be a good thing. Any advice is much appreciated.

Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
I am not overweight
How tall are you, what do you weigh, what is your waist measurement?

There is a category Thin On The Outside Fat On The Inside (or TOFI) where you can be within the normal BMI range but still have fat around your internal organs.
This can also reduce function in the pancreas and cause insulin resistance.

Very low carbohydrate diet can help.

Can you give us some idea about what you eat in a day?
Some people's view of low carbohydrate may differ from others.

Fatty liver and T2 often go hand in hand. Pretty sure the sweeteners in diet drinks had a hand in mine.
You can be fat on the inside without being fat on the outside. My doctor said they couldn't help with fatty liver, but low carbing has improved mine immensely.

I was a T2D TOFI. though was not actually diagnosed with fatty liver. Now in remission for over 3yrs.
Testing my meals with a BG meter showed me that I needed Very Low Carb (between 20gms and 40gms per day) in order to put my T2D into remission.
Although I didn't consciously reduce my calories I lost about 2stone in weight. In fact I probably ate/eat more calories, but since I have never Calorie-counted I have no proof.

You're already doing the diet and exercise. Limiting alcohol is another one.

High blood sugars can make fatty liver worse so medicine to help with control could be good for both the diabetes and fatty liver.

Your doctor should make sure any meds you're on are right for you. With liver conditions - sometimes it's lower doses, sometimes it's meds that don't affect the liver.

A lot depends on how serious your fatty liver is. It can be really mild (very common). In which case they'll likely just monitor it.

It can be reversible.

If it's serious you should know how serious. From fibroscans, biopsies etc

I have fatty liver and type 2, I was diagnosed 8 months ago with fatty liver, and the Doctor read the riot act to me sent me away and said she would review it in 6 months, I have an appointment in January which will be 9 months if it is not cancelled. My point is that she sent me off with no help on how I could help myself apart from a lifestyle change. On my diabetic review. I asked the nurse if I could have help with my diet she I would get me an appointment with the dietician never got back to me, I have now been diagnosed with IPF,

It was non-alcohol fatty liver eat better and cut back on the alcohol, seeing that I only drink on occasion this was a great help
Tagging @JoKalsbeek , who got her diabetes in remission and also got rid of her NAFLD through diet changes. :)

Advice of three syllables. Brilliant. Although, to be honest, her dietary advice would probably have been counterproductive guff anyway so she at least saved you the time of having to sit there and listen to it. You'll get far better advice on this forum.
Out of curiosity do you know what your ALT is?

Docs don't usually do anything much about NAFLD, no medication, no decent, specific advice that actually helps... My specialist told me he'd see me again when I needed painkillers for palliative care. (With his "help" I would've been dead as a doornail 6 years or so ago!). Like @Antje77 said, for me it was the dietary change that fixed my liver, and that was very specifically, cutting carbs, upping fats and making sure I got my protein... I was trying to get the T2 sorted that way, which I succeeded in, and then my liver values returned to normal as well. Which was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome one. Basically, carbs/glucose our bodies can't burn off because we're insensitive to our own insulin, has to get stored somewhere. So, yeah... Cutting carbs pretty much permanently, and no alcohol at least until the liver recovers... Should get you sorted. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html did it for me. Hopefully it'll do it for you, too. ;)
Good luck!
