The t:flex insulin pump from Tandem Diabetes Care has been approved for patients over 12 with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. A press release from the company on January 12 2015, announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had granted them clearance to market the t:flex insulin pump. What is t:flex? The t:flex insulin pump can hold up to 480 units of insulin, making it the largest insulin reservoir available. The capacity of most other pumps is around 200 to 300 units. The pump is designed for people who require more than 100 units of U-100 insulin per day, including teenage type 1 diabetics and many with type 2 diabetes. By designing a pump reservoir that can hold 480 units, people with diabetes will be able to reduce the number of changes required with lower capacity pumps. The t:flex pump is expected to launch in the United States in the second quarter of 2015, with Kim Blickenstaff, president and CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care, confident it will be of great benefit to people with diabetes. "In recognizing that one size does not fit all, the t:flex Pump was developed using Tandem’s proprietary technology platform to bring t:slim’s benefits to people with greater insulin needs," said Blickenstaff. "This first expansion of our product portfolio reflects our ongoing commitment to deliver user-friendly products that address unmet needs in the diabetes community." Tandem Diabetes Care expect to reveal commercialisation objectives for the t:flex pump later this year, but as yet there are no plans for a scheduled release in the UK.
