Is there a list of GPs with "modem views"?

Is there a list of GPs who have "modem views" on diabetes and don't think fat is the course of all problems?

Ideally I wish to be able to put my postcode in and see what options I have if I decide to change GPs.

What are you looking for in a GP exactly and what is your grievance with your current and/or previous ones?

And do you mean "modern views" by any chance?

Doctors only advise, granted their knowledge of certain things may be far superior of people who haven't undergone medical school/ training. If you have views on a particular diet that you have researched and are happy with then you should have no need to trouble a doctor who may not agree with you.

Hi and welcome @ringi :)

I agree with you that putting your postcode on the forum is a bad idea, but maybe you could name a nearby town?
We have members from all over, and though I would hate the idea of anyone naming and shaming a doctor's practice on here, I am sure that people can give some general advice or ideas. Maybe people can offer more detailed info by Private Message?

Having recently changed doctors myself, I found the experience an interesting one.
I went from a practice of 2 docs, one of them extremely unhelpful, to a practice of 8 docs. My thinking was that with 8 to choose from, I could just keep trying different doctors until I found one that i) listened and ii) respected my interest in my own health.

Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a way of identifying a doc who would be sympathetic to low carbing, because even if they are listed as taking a special interest in diabetes, they may be specially interested in encouraging high brown carb intake. :)

So far, I am finding the new practice much more progressive and forward thinking, so I hope you have a similarly good experience.

I'm at a loss as to why someone would change practices just to find a doctor that supports a specific dietary choice...

Regardless of what you eat, providing that your overall health (bloods, HbA1c, lipid profiles, BP, weight, etc) are sound - then it should not matter an ounce to your GP.

If you find that your GP isn't listening to you, or helping with your ailments through correct prescribing of medication and/or referral to the relevant specialists, then that is because the GP is a bad one. A GP is not rendered incompetent or unhelpful because they may (or may not) have you eat carbohydrates. That is your choice.

@ringi, if your GP is being so negligent that it is harming your health then there are governing bodies that you can report them to. I'd find that case to be highly unlikely though. If you want to talk diets, speak with a dietician - not a GP.

People who don't listen to others i.e. the 8 members of this forum I have put on ignore as they talk such utter **** all the time. This now includes the member who thinks they are a moderator.
I am not sure what a "modem" view is but if you are thinking of changing doctors you can use the NHS Choices website to look at the options available in your area.

The surgeries are listed, along with what services may be available and rating as to how good they are. These ratings are based on patient surveys of those who use the surgery (well mine do anyway).

The current practices I use is far enough away from home to need to drive and has parking issues. We did not change doctors when we moved house, as it is near my wife’s work, and I harder ever needed to go. We live in Marple.

They also have mostly part time doctors, so it can take a few weeks to get an appointment with the same doctor as I saw the last time. Likewise it can take 2 or 3 weeks to get an appointment to have blood taken when the doctor tells me to get a blood test done.

They have always told me to have a low fat diet that did not work for me, hence I now have Type 2 and have since found this website. What I am really looking for is a doctor that understands Type 2 as well as Dr. Rangan Chatterjee (of Doctor in the House frame) does and does not consider giving out drugs as being the best way to keep clients happy.

Low levels of fat don't cause T2D. Excessive amounts of carbohydrate for those who may be predispositioned to develop the disease is another matter though.

Your dietary choice is entirely yours, and you will find lots of information regarding various routes here on the forum.

Because of the above, I wouldn't be hunting out GP's that support certain diets. After all, they're a resource for when you have a medical anomaly - not when you want to change eating habits.

There are GPs who get very nasty if you don't agree with their specific instructions to eat low fat and high carbs.
It was over 30 years ago now that I was pregnant and told to follow that type of diet or be taken into hospital and 'fed properly' - with the result that I became very ill with pre eclampsia. Only the lack of a bed over the weekend saved me from being hospitalized, and I went back to low carb foods and was better again in days - the dr took full credit for frightening me into a healthy way of eating and from then on until he retired was always interrogating me about my diet - which was how I learned to lie about what I was eating.
For almost two years before diagnosis I was on a strict diet to lower cholesterol with constant checks and quizzes about foods and tut tutting over my weight gain.
I was hit by a car when on holiday and really should have gone to see what could be done about my knee - but I just did twant to be lectured about my weight and diet so I did not go.

If you don't want drugs, and know what diet you think you need to be on, why do you need a doctor to agree with you?
(As to the low fat diet, I reversed my type 2 on a low fat diet, and the Newcastle diet, so no, a low fat diet doesn't make you diabetic)

I don't understand your problem. Why tell the doctor what you are eating? If he tells you low fat and high carbs is the way to go and is likely to get unpleasant about things, nod and agree, then ignore him. If you manage to lose weight and control your blood sugar, then on your next visit you can tell him how you did it.

@ringi, this is a great question for the forum and I totally understand why you would want to find a progressive surgery/GP who is open to different options for your treatment.
