I agree everyone should choose the way to deal with diabetes that works for them and they feel most comfortable with.
However, if you meant to refer to the low carb way of eating as a fad diet, I would like to respectfully disagree. Low carb is an accepted way of controlling diabetes and has a lot of evidence befind it.
Specifically, in a consensus statement this year, the American Diabetes Association stated the following "Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and requirements." Health care professionals (and especially dietitians) are not always up to date with the latest research, you will find.
