Test for ketones.
Drink some water.
Call 111 or the number for your DSN for advice.

Hey @Gav82 Welcome to the forum :)

Sadly we cannot advise you on what doses you should be take to reduce your high blood glucose levels as your newly diagnosed your nurse will need to guide on changing your doses - under the circumstances though the best thing you can do is to call 111 for emergency help as they should be able to get a doctor to call you back, have you got a ketone testing kit ? Keep drinking plenty of water to help flush the excess glucose through and any signs of feeling unwell get yourself into your local hospital asap, best wishes let us know how you get on ?

Bigotry, reliance on unsupported 'facts', unkindness, unfairness.
Were you given any advice other than how much to inject when you were diagnosed yesterday? Were you given a contact to call if you needed help?

Hi @Gav82 and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about highs getting higher - I second the advice to call your specialist nurse for advice, or if you don't have a means to contact him or her, 111.

Hugs.

I second the advice for the others but can suggest a reason for the high blood sugar - I'm guessing you've been off your food for some time (ketones make you feel sick) so eating well means you've possibly eaten more carbohydrate than usual... Am guessing they start you off on a relatively low dose of insulin as they don't want you to go too low.... It's great that your ketones have come down, though.

Also, when you got the reading over 30 did you repeat the test to see if it was a reader error? (Make sure your hands are clean etc).

Good luck.

People who try and make Diabetes the centre of the party and poor me, I'm special because I have diabetes now everyone run around after me.
We can't really advise you on your insulin, but I suspect your diet may have something to do with it. I think for most of us we started on very low doses, hence food still had a dramatic effect. As it's now the weekend I would imagine that except for emergency, medical assistance is limited. You really need to see whoever is controlling your insulin ASAP on Monday, but for the weekend try and stick to green vegetables, cheeses & meats (without a lot of additives / marination). Stay away from Potato, bread, pasta and rice until you see your D team. I'm assuming you know to stay away from Coke, cakes & honey at nearly ALL times except in case of a hypo, but you are a long way off meeting Mr/s. Hypo. Remember if you are feeling really sick, straight to Emergency and don't drive yourself there.

Unless you know that he is carb counting (unlikely) and not on fixed doses to cover normal carbohydrate containing meals (very likely) advice to stay away from carbs seems unwise. It might be more helpful to ask OP what insulin he has been told to take with meals? We know 111 told him to take 3 units to correct blood sugars over 30, so they think 1 unit will bring him down over 7, which is an incredibly strong correction factor when the default is usually 1u brings you down by 3mmol. So perhaps, given the recent diagnosis, he is very insulin sensitive, which would again make advice to avoid carbs to someone on an unknown insulin regime unwise. For all we know he could be on mixed insulin and have rigid required carb intake.

Don’t go rushing in trying to get your BG levels down to quick or you will feel very groggy as your body would of been use to running high for quite a while being undiagnosed take things easy and steadily over the next couple of weeks keep testing regular especially just before meals and 2hr after meals see how you react to certain foods we all react differently keep checking them ketones but like I say don’t panick don’t rush do plenty of research and reading I’ve only been diagnosed 2 Months and the things I know and learnt in that time threw reading blogs/forums is priceless you found this group so that tells me your doing good don’t be hard on yourself it gets so confusing and stressful at times but harm yourself with plenty knowledge and all of a sudden it just clicks take care of yourself and good luck
And me personally I’d sooner be on the high side of BG readings than low side till you find your way with correct insulin dosages

Hi, I agree Sobo82. Don't panic.I was diagnosed type1 in Aug and because I didn't understand the numbers I thought that if my BG went high I was going to die there and then. I got a lot of support and reassurance on the phone from the hospital. Defo agree with the advice, masses of water, keep checking clean hands BG and if necessary get to hospital.

Thank you for the reply. Yeah I ate more carbohydrates yesterday than I had in the last 2 weeks. Blood sugar is down to 13.6 this morning.
Trying to educate myself with what foods to eat together with keeping my sugar levels normal

Hi @Gav82 This morning sounds a lot better - get a call into your DSN tomorrow and run through your numbers with them - today just keep a food and insulin diary so you have something to discuss with them, get yourself a copy of ‘think like a pancreas’ from Amazon, it’s an excellent educational read and will help you build your knowledge. It’s inportant to remember as a newly diagnosed that it will take time to get used to this and although it’s alarming to see high numbers this will improve, just make sure your carrying fast acting glucose at all times and next to your bed, so glucogel, glucotabs, jelly babies to treat low blood sugars am sure you have been told that already but it’s vital for a type 1 too be prepared. Also shout if you need any help/support at all :)

@Juciyj another recomendation i got from this forum was a phone app Carbs and Cals.

Hope im not intruding...

For the op. It takes some time to get grips with this stuff. Keep good comunications with you DN and Dr... i had email with both and regular phone calls with my Dn being 100+km away.

When i was released i was on a sliding scale till i worked out how to count carbs.

Not sure if this helps,, i hope it does.

You could rry the Diabetes carwine which may help more than 111 A high blood sugar needs treating but isn't as acute a problem as a low bs unless you have hugh ketones too if you need kerone strips see the DN or go to a chemist.

Yeah I feel ok with the current high sugar. My ketones are 0.4 down from 5 on Friday, slowly feeling healthier and getting my head round everything
