testing after food

Hi I'm type 2 but a friend of mine has gestestional diabetes. she has been told to test herself a hour after food, unsurprisingly its quite high... on the strength of these results she has been put on insulin three times a day.. does this sound kosher or should she test at two hours after? Cheers guys.. Adrian

She should test after 2 hours, levels are starting to go down then. 1 hour testing will be the highest spike.

Gestation diabetes and testing is more detailed than Type2. Sometimes the advice is to test after 1hr. and some HCP's want the readings for 1 and 2hrs. The spikes are what they are interested in and that is why you have to keep a record of them.

Interesting. Begs the question. if spikes are important for gestational diabetes, why are we told it's not important for normal type 2s, and only HbA1c counts? Many of us think spikes in themselves ARE important. Does this support that, or is the concern over spikes with gestational diabetes about the effect on the baby itself? BTW, genuine question, not a sarcastic dig!

I was rescently Gestational (turned to type 1) i was told to test 2 hours after food to keep an eye on the spikes. Much tighter control is needed with Gestational as can affect the size of the baby massivley. I controlled mine well below 8's mainly and had a baby at 36 weeks weighing a wooping 8lb 8oz. Poorly controlled diabetes can increase the risk for still birth etc which is why you are monitored so closely

Specialists are divided about when to test with Gestation Diabetes. The reasoning behind the 1hr. test is that pregnant ladies are advised to try and get tight control of their levels to minimise the risk to their baby. If spikes are occurring that nobody is aware of then they could be dangerous for baby as these levels are being transferred to baby. A normal level at 2hrs. does not address the possible magnitude of the spike at 1hr. Food is processed quicker than normal when pregnant.
