Approaching 65 I'm probably getting closer to meeting the Grim Reaper, but I believe I've still got at least a decade, if not two. to go. I haven't made any specific plans for my funeral. I have made a Will, as I had to deal with my father's probate and it was difficult and expensive as he hadn't made a recent Will.
It is a good idea for anybody with anything much to leave to make a Will, especially if you have a partner, family or dependants.
A lot of people think that if you are married you don't need to make a Will as your partner will be entitled to your estate, but it is more complicated than that, and other people like children or parents might also be entitled to part. And it will be more expensive to administer if your wishes aren't clear.
Making a straightforward Will costs around £150, you can shop around getting quotes from different solicitors. If you belong to a professional body or trade union, they will often provide a free Will writing service through their solicitors. I had mine made free through my union solicitors five years ago, and will be updating it this year.
As for my funeral, I expect to have a cheap a funeral as possible. The funds in my estate will cover the cost (it is the first expense that has to be paid from the estate). I will be cremated, and I hope someone will scatter my ashes on a sea, river, or wild place. But I'm not that bothered as I won't be there!
