Hi Everyone.
I figured its time to introduce myself as Ive been floating around the forums for a while. 8 years ago I was diagnosed as diabetic type 2. I wont bore you with the details of why I did nothing about it but safely can say I was depressed and needed support for my other illness before I could deal with the diabetes. Sometime I wonder at the quality of my Dr. Did great as diagnosing diabetes but then left me to my own devices ie not going to see her again for 7 years. However I digress. I have been taking my medications since last September (well on and off in September/October but religiously since November) My first reading in September was 8.4 and I wasnt retested again until last Friday and came out at 9.1. (HbA1c). I have had a hard time on metformin and kept falling asleep after taking them. September I started on 500mg metformin and was changed in December to Metformin SR 1000mg. I went for my blood test results last Friday and my new medication is 2 x 1000mg Metformin SR and something called Sitagliptin 100mg, Dont know what that one does but its supposed to help with the BG. I also have high blood pressure and cholesterol 2.50mg Ramipril and 40mg Atorvastatin. I also take a monthly vitamin D 20000iu Cholecalciferol. My September blood reading was under 10 for Vit D. Despite asking to be tested this time around for my vitamin D level apparently it wasnt done. I have requested it again in 4 weeks time when I am getting my BG tests done. I asked for blood glucose test kit from the NHS but like a lot of us was told we dont need to test. After reading this forum for a while and having the increased BG despite me cutting out all sugars I figured I have to start testing even if I support the cost myself.(BTW its cheaper than a prescription any ways). I have order my testing supplies and they should be here by the end of the week. I live alone, cook my own food, and no one is offering me food. January I started with the NHS diet and quickly realized this is increasing my BG. Eating carbs makes me constantly hungry. I had been trying to cut out carbs since last may and now realise I was probably on the right route. December/January wasnt exactly low carb months but Im back on track and look forward to my new way of eating. I have been using myfitnesspal to monitor what I eat. Both when I cut back and when I eat naughtily. I know I am a glutton for chinese and pizza which spirals my calorie intake. 1st March I am determined to start monitoring both my weight, calories, carbs and blood sugars.

@Kyi - Hello and glad you have made yourself known to us on the forum:)

Kyi welcome and hi for your information medicating type2's do not have to pay for prescriptions this includes any prescription your doctor gives you. But I believe you have to apply for an exemption card .

Here is link to info on exemption certificate

Sorry Kyi and liam got confused slightly there.

Yeah I have a medical exemption card. But what do you do if your Dr wont prescribe what you need?

My doc is the same to be honest but the practice nurse agrees with me so she slips me the odd amount of test strips now and again. But testing is so important that if you have to stand the cost that's what you have to do I suppose I still hope to persuade the doctor though.
