I #diabetesdare you...

I had a nice chat with two people while waiting for my eye screening. I never seem to see people waiting at the D clinic - clearly my not of the NHS is so organised we all slip in and out of appointments on time (although that does not explain the lack of car parking). I suppose I could offer snack sized cheese round if ever I did meet anyone...
 
Bit of the NHS, not not!
 
I take my husband with me and he chats to anyone and everyone. I will never forget the day he calmed a hysterical first timer woman down in the waiting room at the breast screening place. Priceless. Took my mind off of what was going to happen next.

I often talk to people too, I live in a little Yorkshire village and work close by so there's almost always someone I know in the doctor's waiting room. It was totally different when I lived in London, Londoners rarely talk to people they don't know, I don't know why.

So here's the #diabetesdare for you. At your next clinic, try and speak to one or two people. See what happens. If one person does it and breaks the ice, then others may continue. Let's make it a communal session, not a meeting with the executioner!

This is a great idea. It's a tough subject to get people to open up about. I'm a T1 and have been for 48 years. Getting someone to talk about diabetes who has had it as long as I have and who isn't on a pump is next to impossible.
I will continue to put myself out there. No, I'm not the right size, shape, or BG - but with the help of others like me, I might get there.

I'm 44 years in and still happy on MDI :) Seems to be quite rare.
 
So I went to the pump clinic this morning and during my first waiting period, nobody was too interested in talking.

In my second I ended up chatting to someone who ran the peer support group, another person who has a hypo alert dog that is also on the forum and a mother and daughter who were really interested in the Libre. Definitely a bingo call and I suggested giving the forum meetup details to the support group, which seemed to go down as a good idea!

Result!
