Hello everyone. I've been struggling lately. Last Sunday I caved in and had 6 mini donuts at the fair. You know those little deep fried pieces of batter with cinnamon and sugar. Well that did me in that day for sure. Went from a nice 5.4 to an 11 after. Ever since I've been struggling with keeping my numbers low. Mostly my numbers before a meal are between 5 and 6. But it seems no matter what I eat they jump to over 8 at one hour and then drop to 7.x the next hour. I'm trying to get back on my low carb (a little higher fat but not to much higher) diet but it seems I'm failing somewhere.

Any way. What I'm looking for is some clinical info on spikes. What is a normal BG rise for a person? Is having it between 7 and 9 for only an hour or two that bad?

There are two main schools of thought on spikes. Some recent research suggests that the height of the spike is the cause of damage, but the old school says it is the total area under the curve (i.e.total amount and duration) that is important. I dont think the clinicians agree yet. Personally I go with the latter, since I believe that it is the duration of the stress that does damage, otherwise we would notice it early on after diagnosis. Having had spikes of 33+ I have not noticed any significant change in my body.

Just seen the opthamologist today and had the full diabetic screening, and all is fine with no retinopathy or macular degeneration, no glaucoma, and no new capilliary growth. Yay! This indicates that the first theory (spike height) is not happening.

Mind you I think I must add that as far as I know I have never had a spike of any where near that sort of level but I do have neuropathy feet and hands and retinopathy so it could be your right Oldvatr.

I am a strange beggar in many ways. A high has no effect on me at all. I am totally hyper unaware. Feel fine when high (ex hippie, which may explain things) No symptoms of acidosis either.
Todays high was 5.0 which was 2 hrs after fish and chips supper (jumbo fish in batter) 4hr PP was 4,7 And I missed out my evening meds today.
