Hi all, I was in Edinburgh at the weekend and during the time i was there i did a lot of walking about. I found after an hour or so that my legs and feet were hurting quite a lot.

Is this a result of my type 1 diabetes or is this just normal aches from long distance walking. I can't remember this affecting me before diagnosis. I just find that it ruins my freedom as i have to stop every now and again to rest my feet. I am 22 as well so its not like i am old!

Any help would be appreciated.

O and remember to keep smiling!!

I think that it could be if you do not regularly do this sort of activity that it may be just a reaction to unaccustomed exercise and the build up of lactic acid in the muscles that that can bring about.

I agree with both comments. You most probably not used to walking that much in a short time. Just give your legs some massage and you will be back to normal in a couple of days. Take it easy but continue enjoying your walks and wear good shoes.

I think it could be. I started having the same problem last year, despite being a daily walker. There is a condition, peripheral artery disease, which is usually a variety of atherosclerosis. Before, if I walked 15 miles, I might feel tired muscles. These new pains are "sharper" and they are localized. Usually just above the ankles, sometimes also the bum. Never the ankles, the calf muscles, or the thigh muscles. If the bum, the pattern of the discomfort is only in a line, resembling a tendinitis in the hamstrings. These pains come on after only 6 to 8 miles and go away when I rest. It doesn't happen every time.

None of the symptoms seem neuropathic to me. I also don't notice any foot problems.

I don't know if person so young can have atherosclerosis yet, even a T1. I'm in my 60s.

An illustration online shows that sometimes pain symptoms in the legs may be caused by artery disease in the pelvic region.

Initially you will get some pain, but if you will walk everyday then you will not get the pain. I also got same pain at first time. Now I do not get pain. I will walk 2 hrs. per day. It is very good exercise for type 1 person.

I had this. My doc wrote me out a prescription for bendroflumethiazide (water pills) once a day. Fixed it!

There's a medical term: 'claudication'.
Claudication is due to insufficient blood supply to the muscles normally caused by Arterial disease.
It usually affects only 1 to 2% of people under 60 years of age but diabetes is a risk factor for claudication. So if it persists it may be advisable to consult your doctor. Though as the you are only in your early twenties I don't personally see it as the cause of your pain.
