I've had pains in the tops of my legs now for months, they even hurt to touch, and ache all the time. I've tried vitamin d as doc suggested but it hasn't worked. Does anyone else get this?

Yes. No resolution to it yet.

Have you been told what it is? What have you tried?
My GP has no answer for it. It has no name, but is suspected to be neuropathy, except it does not tick all the boxes for thst either. It is like I have just run a 4 minute mile. I also have similar in a finger, bit like I have suffered splinters from fibreglass insulation. However, this responds well to my electric massager, so I suspect blocked lymph channels. Have only just got the massager (arrived today) so I am yet to explore the other aches and pains.

Whereabouts is the pain? Both Dr Bernstein and Jenny Ruhl say that tendon issues are very common among diabetics. One syndrome Dr B talks a lot about is ITB/TFL (outer thigh between the knee and the hip). He recommends trigger point therapy for it.

If you want to read more about the problem (I think it's caused by glycation), you can read more at Jenny Ruhl:

http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/16162241.php

Or at Dr Bernstein:

http://www.diabetes-book.com/long-term-sequelae/ (if you download the PDF of the chapter, you'll find a whole section on ITB/TFL)

Hope you can get some relief :)

A real horror story here in the second article, but nonetheless required reading (but not at bedtime!!!!).

I read the section on ITB/TFL with special interest since I have just purchased an industrial strength massage machine. I can now confirm that my symptoms have for the first time actually diminished after only about 10 minutes of therapy, both in my fingers, and in my upper thigh area. Although the relief is temporary at the moment, I will continue to treat and see how things progress. Certainly my thigh muscles were less tense when i awoke this morning after a bedtime session, and I had more flexibility when coming down the stairs

This is very very helpful.
I want to tag @eldergarth and encourage him to read the second link pdf download pages 5-8 especially. Please.
Especially considering his little wobbles when rising out of his chair and bed.

What also comes across is how damaging high carbs in hospital food can be in causing strokes in diabetic patients.

Me too! I had mentioned this to my GP who wasn't interested, and told me not to worry - "it's just part of getting old" :(

Dr Bernstein is a specialist in his field and pioneer so our gps won't be up to his education.
Awareness is all we have for now. Keeping bgs in excellent levels will stop the damage or progression.
I think he was saying that it takes years for repair with good bgs and supplements.
In other words on the nhs its DIY. Do it yourself, as much as possible. Otherwise the diabetes will break the nhs bank.
There should be heavier emphasis on prevention.
I now believe the nhs is burdened due to lack of awareness in the 60s/70s and 80s. Some would argue up to present day.
It is having to deal with all those patients which were not patients before.
I'm hopeful the nhs will be able to catch up, one day. Not through coping through a pandemic but just catching up on forgot patients.
