Morning all,

I'm just curious as to if anyone else has experienced a weight gain on LCHF? I love the way of eating and am getting my best BG levels in ages ( since I last did LCHF), but, in the first 3 weeks I gained 3 kg. Now, my weight generally fluctuates by a kg no matter how I eat so this is odd. I don't count calories but equally I don't think I'm eating as much as I did, in fact I find I'm just not as hungry so eat fewer meals overall. I drink 3 lites of water a day minimum too. I guess I will have to monitor calories on MFP just to get an indicator but was curious abiout others experiences?

The LCHF way appealed as calorie counting never works for me as I loose interest. I'm more interested in the BGs, but really want to drop some weight too as I know that also helps my levels.

I had gained 9kg so stopped the lcgh diet. I have since lost 6kg of that weight

I haven't ever had weight gain, but I did get over a year of stalled weight loss.
- tried all sorts, cutting fat, cutting calories, adding fat, adding calories, more exercise, less, more water, yada yada

Then recently, I cut coffee and did a few 24 hour fasts (as per Jason Fung, intended to reduce background insulin resistance) and found the weight has slowly started to inch downwards again, but it is early days, so not drawing any conclusions for the moment.

Yes I have I did it deliberately to see if I could and to slow down my weight loss I feel that LCHF or not you still need to conrol your calorific intake so I also count calories but adjust them by increasing or decreasing protein or fats accordingly exercise is not realy an option for me if I could have burned off extra calories by increasing exercise I would have.

My weight loss stalled at one point for a few months, and fluctuated by a couple of pounds every week.

Starting 24h IF's seemed to kick start the process again, although I am now marooned at a pound or two over my 11 stone target.

I did gain a few kgs when I first tried LCHF.
That was after I had lost a lot of weight on Newcastle diet, then regained almost half of that lost by trying to follow the 'healthy' NHS recommended diet. I soon realised that with the higher fats I was taking too literally the 'eat until you have had enough' advice. I never had had enough, because all that cream and cheese was delicious. Low carb and moderate fat is better for me.

I think there are as many variations on LCHF as there are people doing it so maybe some info on what you are eating and how many carbs you consume might be helpful. I recently had a bit of a plateau but hopefully have started downwards again.. like some others I fast intermittently usually in about 40 hour stretches although sometimes longer which seems to help with weight loss..

I haven't done the LCHF for a while.... but yes I did gain on it. I think it would be very much to do with portion sizes though and with that diet you would eat more fat than normal to fill your stomach. As for fasting I am not a fan of that myself as that just encourages my metabolism to slow down and then I store more fat if I eat again. I prove that every time I've fasted at all in the past. Maybe it works for some.... but science is that the body is designed to store your fat if you're not feeding it. So no matter what your diet really I think the most important thing to get right is the portion size which would help with the weight and sugar levels. Getting it right and working for you is another thing. I wish you the best. :)

I agree portion size is important, @Mep . Fats like cream, butter, cheese, etc do have high calorific value, and the taste would make me want to overindulge.
Can you explain the science bit about the body storing fat when you don't feed it, please? My understanding is that the body burns fat when the gycogen stores are depleted. The gycogen stores would be emptied by fasting.

Thanks all, I was was doing IF a while back so may incorporate that in again. I'm not giving up on LCHF.The thing that I guess we need to remembr is eat until we are full - not overflowing. I'm a paid up member of dietdoctor and the advice on there is great ( as it is on here) and I do follow it. I may have to break out my running shoes....

I did not gain but I do need to watch portions. I also need to limit saturated fats and avoid dairy and keep protein moderate. Nuts also need to be moderated.
I eat an avocado a day divided into three meals, a little olive oil or mayo and a few pumpkin seeds as my main fats. Protein I keep to 4-5 oz a day and carbs always under 20. I eat fat only until satisfied, not full. My meals are small and takes me no where near 20 minutes to eat. I could keep eating but if I stop and wait I am generally very satisfied. I try to remember my stomach is the size of my fist and to keep meals close to that. Fat takes up very little room but is very high in calories of course. The fiber in avocado keeps me not hungry for a long time.
