Hey guys, I was diagnosed almost 18 months ago as type 1. My question to all is do you still find having a few beers acceptable?, I really enjoy a glass or two of wine / beers, clearly I know this raises blood sugars and wondered if I'm maybe over thinking it?, thoughts? Jon :-))

Hi I also enjoy a few beers but I am getting used to vodka & diet coke with ice its a drink that doesn't affect my blood sugar but will still give a lot of pleasure on a night out

Do a bit of investigation on what drinks have what affect on you - test drink, test drink repeat until you forget what you were doing. LOL

We're all different but most beers will increase your BG, Lager especially, dry wines have less carbs, spirits with diet mixers will have virtually none. Be aware the liver is a 'man', it can only cope with one thing at a time and alcohol once consumed is it's sole purpose in life, it won't do a glucose dump if you go low.

Everything in moderation, and enjoy a drink or 2 now and again.

I've been type 1 for over 54 years and I enjoy a couple of pints, just remember everything thing in moderation.Good luck and enjoy your pint.

Red wine has minimal effect on MY BG and also Tennents lager.

It's still acceptable to drink whilst having T1D, but as @slip says watch out for nighttime hypos. Your BG can really plummet and if you're too tipsy you won't notice.

I have a good amount of carbs before bed after drinking, maybe 40g with no bolus insulin.

Red wine keeps me steady or slight rise, and vodka with water and lemon will lower me.

Perfectly acceptable, it's your body your choice.

I usually drink red wine but just come back from a couple of days away and had 2 beers on Thursday night after having a curry, really enjoyed them too :)

I am smiling reading this post. Love a glass of red wine on a night out. Last time I was so scared of alcohol impact on my BGL that on my birthday dinner I didn't even touch it. I have just seen hope!

I believe that to continue to live a life with our medical conditions you cannot live a life of total abstinence, I enjoy a glass of red wine or two but monitor what it does to your blood sugar levels. If I have something that cause a rise I go for a walk to bring it back down again. The more you walk the more your sugar levels come down. I like chocolate and with the same principle have a square of dark chocolate every day.

I enjoy a drink, dry white wine usually lowers my sugar levels considerably but lager usually raises it temporarily and then lowers it later, you have to find how you react and others have said a snack before bed is a good idea. Drinking with food is usually better so at lunchtime with a meal means you are probably better armed to deal with it (as you are awake!!) I personally don't feel I should avoid this social pleasure and it is manageable so needn't be avoided if that if what you enjoy! Life is all about that after all!:)
