Only on day 3 of starting 500mg (will increase to twice a day next week) - does it take a while for it to start to work?? Is it a cumulative effect? Am I expecting miracles?

Also, I had planned on continuing low carb higher fat, BUT as my cholesterol needs to lower my DN told me no more than 4 eggs a week, cut down the nuts / red meats / dairy, no butter () and reintroduce some carbs for energy. This morning I had toast for breakfast and my bs was 15.6 after 2 hours! But if I can't have eggs, what do I eat? Would porridge be better (oats for cholesterol?) (Getting very stressed and confused with what to eat!) Any suggestions gratefully received xx

Firstly, Metformin is not a miracle drug. It helps reduce the amount of glucose the liver produces and is supposed to be an appetite suppressant. What it won't do is reduce spikes after eating. It is cumulative, but don't expect any miracles.

Secondly, your nurse isn't right in telling you to cut down on eggs! That myth was debunked a long time ago. Our bodies manufacture our cholesterol because we need it in every cell in our bodies. Very little of it comes from food. So go ahead and eat eggs. Some people find dairy foods don't help their cholesterol, but many others find the opposite (me included). I think she is pushing you back to high carb/low fat. If this is what you want, then fair enough, but your post toast level shows you what that can do.

Personally I eat red meat, all dairy, and about 12 to 14 eggs a week. My cholesterol breakdown is ideal, and has improved on each test since diagnosis in January 2014.

What was your cholesterol breakdown?

@Bluetit1802

Cholesterol 5.7
HDL 0.94
Cholesterol:HDL 6.06
Triglycerides 3.10
LDL 3.35

I agree re diet and nurse, although LCHF didn't work for me either! The conflicting info re eggs is very annoying as i do have 2 eggs every day!

I think you need to leave it a few weeks to see an effect. Test with your meter before and 2 hours after meals. Avoid foods which cause the bigger spikes. Believe your meter, ot the DN.
