Urine retention after 1 Metformin tablet?

Hi everyone.

I'm new here & new to diabetes. I have been told I have just gone over the reading that gives me a dignoses of diabetes & was given 500mg Metformin tablets which the gp said to take twice daily, but the diabetes nurse said it was o.k for me to take 1 tablet every 3 days to start with until my body gets used to them.
Well, as I am usually extremely susceptible to side effects of medication I was very pleased that when I took the first tablet yesterday morning I seemed to be o.k. I did feel a little 'zoned out' but that may have been tiredness as I am not well anyway & didn't sleep very well the night before. However, it seems to me that since I took it I seem not to be passing very much urine at all, which for me is most unusual as I am on diuretics. I believe Metformin is known to cause urine retention, but does anyone know would that be possible afer just one tablet? Oh, I have also been feeling faint on & off for most of today which may or may not be connected.
Thanks.
Jenny.

metformine can make you pee often in the beginning... and to others the problem can be stomack problems usually only initially...
I have now the anoying habbit of going to the toilet twice every night but otherwise no bad feelings and experience
I jsut took 2x 500mg right away .. and now after the first month raised to 2 x 850mg a day

Thanks for your reply, but I seem to be having the opposite problem. I feel the need to go, but am only passing a tiny amount of urine, which as I said, is very unusual for me. It just seems odd that this has started after the first dose of Metformin when I've never had the problem before. I've had no stomach problems whatsoever, but it was only a small dose. The reason I was told to start very slowly is because usually if a med had side effects I'll get them. Jenny.

if it is because of metformine it should fade soon as meformine is out of the body in about 12 hours...

it is a baaaad sideeffect and maybe dangerous , so talk to your GP as soon as you can

but when having a high blood glucose many people get urine infections so the problems could also be due to an infection... does it hurt whan trying to pee ?

Thanks for that. I will give them a ring in the morning.

Sorry, missed that one. Trying to get used to how this works, lol.
There's no pain or discomfort & I am used to urine infections & what they feel like, the mad dash to the loo etc. Just not peeing as much as usual. It seems unlikely it wuuld be a side effect after just one dose of metformin yesterday, but equally it's odd I've never experienced it before.

yes it is odd and the weather is not hotter than usual where you live ?
It is quite warm, but I get served regular drinks by my husband. I'm not lazy, lol, he's my carer. I know I'm not dehydrated. I will give the gp a ring tomorrow, see what they make of it. Once again, thanks.
