Do I have prediabetes?

Hi all, I would really appreciate some help in understanding my glucose readings.

A bit of background: type 2 diabetes is very common in my family. Had a HbA1C test last year, was told "everything is fine", not told what my reading was. My BMI is low so I can't help but think doctors aren't taking me seriously, and I'm now aware that low iron levels can affect this test which I have.

I've now purchased my own glucose monitor and I have low fasting blood sugar levels (3.7 mmol/L this morning). When I have a normal, healthy meal it goes up to 5-6 mmol/L. However I had a chocolate bar and 2 hours later it spiked to 8.5mmol/L - into the prediabetes range.

So do I have prediabetes? My fasting glucose levels are low, is this normal with high post-prandial? And is this something should discuss with my doctor or self-manage? In my experience they've not been particularly helpful.

Thank you so much for any advice! It's very appreciated :-)

It's hard to ascertain whether you have pre-diabetes or not, without an actual value from an HbA1c test. Although you are classed as pre-diabetic from your post-prandial reading of 8.5mmol/l; it's not entirely conclusive by itself.

I'd phone your GP and ask for the result of last year's HbA1c, I'd also request another one to see whether there is a noticeable increase on last years - and also to see whether you fall within the pre-diabetic range.

your numbers are perfectly healthy, the number from the chocolate bar should though after 2 hours go Down under the 7mmols... so you can chek that another time and if after 2,5 hours your number is under the 7 mmol again after such a big heavycarb-loaded meal , then your pancreas is working perfectly well....a non diabetic can also spike over the 7mmols if f.x. eating half a kg caramels or drinking 1,5 liter sugarfilled Coca-cola and alike...
but for your own sake if there is a lot of genetic diabtes in your closest Family, I would only eat half of these chocolate bars at a time if I were you...
when being diabetic type 2 here in Denmark we are adviced not to eat more than 5 grams of sugar in each meal and preferably less.... I would think that if you could keep a civilized 10 grams per "unhealthy" meal then maybe you will never become diabetic...but some do actually become diabetic even though they already live a very very healthy food-style...so there is no garantee in life anyway.
