Is trying to reverse T2 diabetes too late for me?

Hi Carina, I had been diabetic for almost 10yrs and taking Metformin when I discovered this forum and started low carb high fat diet. I was able to stop medication after a few months and now control my diabetes with diet and exercise only. But, and it's sad to say but if I eat higher carb for a couple of days my bg levels shoot up again and I wake with a dry mouth etc So, in my case I would have to say that my diabetes is well controlled and I wouldn't call it reversed so much as halted in its tracks - dependent on my sticking to low carb and exercise though. I do feel well most of the time and my levels are in the "normal" range so I will keep low carbing. Good luck with your quest

When the ND and the Blood Sugar Diet claim to 'reverse' diabetes do they really mean that you will always be a diabetic and cannot go back to before diabetes? So what happens with the pancreas if someone like yourself has lost the weight they need to lose, eat low carb and healthy? I know a little about the beta cells dying off so is it a case of they die off and cannot get replaced obviously? Sometimes I still don't understand this condition. Does this mean that before I was diagnosed diabetic, my pancreas was working overload (based on the foods I was eating at the time) and got to a point where it (the pancreas) just didn't work anymore? If this is the case, I can't help but feel guilty that my diet/lifestyle pre-diabetes is my fault! :-(

no I think they mean that people can be cured... but the problem is with weight loss that the latest statistics on the success in weightloss says that only 1/166 persons do succeed in keeping their weight off seen in a longer perspective like 10 years, and that if one gaines it all back one is very likely to become diabetic once more...

The best way to keep weight off is to keep the lower carb diet like forever and do a lot of excercise also like forever... it also has the advantage of growing older in a more fit and joyfull way I would claim

Oh dear Carina, I'm afraid that I can't answer that for you a) I don't have that kind of medical knowledge and b) reading others posts on here, we all seem to have had slightly different experiences of "reversing" our diabetes. Some of us can eat more carbs now that our weight is down and our bg levels "normalised" others of us were slim to begin with but have to keep ,our carb intake to 20g or less. I don't think that there is an easy answer to your questions but hopefully other, more knowledgeable forum members will be along shortly to share their knowledge/experience. What I can say is don't feel guilty, it accomplishes nothing, looking to the future will energise you to manage the diabetes to the best of your ability. Good luck

People find different things.

@andcol can eat exactly as he wishes these days, and I believe @Enclave is very similar. I seem o be able to eat fairly freely, but my tastes have changed and I find I can't be too much fussed with too many carbs.

To be honest, you're just going to have t wait and see. I would however advise you not to absolutely set your heart on it. Absolutely have hope, but also retain an open mind.

Thanks again all. Will give it a go and keep you all posted on how I do . This forum is brilliant!

If you don't mind my asking, how old are you? I wonder if any one knows the oldest patient to reverse their diabetes - I'm wondering about an 90 year old relative with a sibling who is a very healthy 100 year old....

I have seen the research on this diet and it is true. But I wonder if I will be alive after 600 calories a day?
The 600 cals is a bit of a misnomer as they were taken up by 3 shakes, and then there was a wizz up of greens and the like accounting for another 200, so its really 800 cals. Unless you have a very low BMI to start you will be fine
