Getting Through a Break-up

My boyfriend of the last 3 1/2 years broke up with me this week, so needless to say I've been enduring some pretty high stress-readings!

Anyway, as I was only diagnosed at 21yrs old, I've been with him since the day I got diabetes. While I'm months away from wanting to meet anyone new, I'm apprehensive that I'm gonna have to start all over again, and if I'm lucky enough to meet the right guy effectively "teach" him.

So I was wondering....how have you all approached the subject with someone new in the past? Any advice?
 
@becky.ford93 First, I'm really sorry to hear about your break up :(

With my boyfriend, I was really open about it from the start, but I didn't dump loads of detail on him from the start. For me, the best thing has been to encourage him to ask questions, rather than just vomiting it all at him!

More recently (we've been together about 2 and a half years), I've taught him how to test my blood, and scan my Libre sensor. Next week, he's going to come to a DSN appointment with me for the first time.

Just be really honest about it, I would say. If he can't accept what you have to live with every day, then he doesn't deserve you anyway, if he can't recognise how strong and incredible that makes you!
 
Hi @becky.ford93 . Sorry to hear that your relationship has come to an end and it's affected your control.
I'm sure you'll get your control back pretty soon.
As for teaching a new guy in the future. Well I'm an old boy nowadays but when I met my now wife back in the day ( she was and still is a nurse in a very busy hospital ) the one thing that she struggled with the most was me going hypo. I have to admit that hypos then were quite often severe. Being present at a hypo really unsettled her even with all her nursing knowledge. What scarred her the most was the change in personality. Nothing else about my diabetes really caused any issues.
Problem with starting new relationships is they can lead to low blood sugars especially if the new person in your life is REALLY nice;);). So my advice I guess is forewarn about low blood sugars, signs, change of personality, dangers and importantly ways to treat.

I am pretty open with everyone about my diabetes, so when dating I just mention it in passing (e.g. If injecting on a date) my boyfriend is now SUPER interested in everything diabetes (sometimes a little annoying!) but he's really good with helping when hypo and has his own theories on best food for a hypo.... most people I've met are quite curious, I wouldn't be too concerned about diabetes, it is just something you have like an allergy and let people know about. Quite a good weeding out criteria as well if people react negatively
