oats just got shock

I can eat oats - a small portion though- 25g of oats made with 25ml of milk and water- I bulk it out with some ground almonds, flaked almonds, nibbled hazel nuts and raspberries or blackberries - sometimes a few pumpkin seeds - a spoonful of creme fraiche ( I don't like cream much) and a bit of sweetener - makes a great big bowl that doesn't spike me.

Try a smaller portion without the syrup and the blueberries - I can't add blueberries as although I'm ok with a couple mixed with porridge they do cause a spike - it's all about portion size and food combinations

I have heard that some people add an egg but I haven't tried this and now I have an egg allergy won't be able too

ETA - Oops should say 15g of oats

It's weird so I had dark chocolate with peanut butter spread on. 1 hour later I'm at 5.7 never been in 5s since testing . Habin lunch now chicken salad so strange was 6.9 just before choc

Adding fat to carbs can slow the spike but might show up after 2 hours.

Generally a fat heavy meal/ snack and low carb you might not see any rise until much later. It can carry over to your next meal as well. I eat a very high fat diet and very low carb an diet my rise is t usually until after 3 hours. Some fats keep me higher longer. Nuts, saturated fat and dairy do. We all have our nuances.

At the 2 hour mark I was about 6.8 but I'd had lunch and an apple with my salad

For some Type 2's oats in moderation are okay. They are low GI. In the original poster's case I would think it was the maple syrup - deadly! The original poster could repeat without the syrup and test his sugar afterwards.

I'm sorry but its just as likely to be the oats..
There is no point in eating high carb food when trying to maintain a low carb way of eating. A food which is 60% carb is in no way "good" for anyone with Type 2 even in "moderation" and is simply best avoided completely.

Think I'll try the low Carb porridge alternatives and eggs too with veggies on other mornings

Sorry @bulkbiker - I love you but have to disagree with you somewhat here - not everyone is extreme low carb like yourself - some of us are low carb but more moderate - if someone is eating to their meter and can tolerate certain carbs why should they avoid them? - moderation for me is what keeps me on my plan - avoidance for me is a trigger

Personally I would just avoid things that are "like" what you used to eat as it's just to easy to slip back to the "anything in moderation" way of thinking that leads to higher sugars. It's far better to discover newer and nicer things like full fat yoghurt or berries and cream and have those instead. Oats have always tasted like cardboard to me unless loaded up with cream and sugar and I never quite understood why people rave about them.

Well what a dull place it would be if we all agreed...
I would say though that if people are having higher readings than they want (like the OP) then it is far better to avoid anything that raises sugars significantly until they are at a lower level when it is less dangerous to their health to experiment.

I believe the OPs meter is saying she doesn't tolerate those carbs. Maybe once she gets her bs in order she can try again but I think it would be best to take them off the menu at least for now. SOME people can eat moderate carbs but some need to be as low as bulk biker, like myself. The Op is testing and not getting great results. Oats are as bad as potato for me. Not worth going there. I'd rather just eat the butter or cream.

I am not at the extreme end of low carbing, but I know from my testing that oats spike me very high. Not that I am keen on them as I was just trying if a Staffordshire oatcake was any use as a wrap - it was no good for me despite not being that high in carbs. By contrast I can tolerate medium amount of potato, not that I eat these more than occasionally even so.
