Metformin Dose

Hi I was diagnosed with type 2 last year and was on just diet control but my last A1C result was high . I went to see my Diabetic nurse and she prescribed me Metformin 500 mg 2 tablets with breakfast and 2 with dinner. My question is, is this normal dose of Metformin? Nurse said to me because of my age she need to give me high dose so I won't get any complications in future. I am 34, body weight 170kg and height 5'11.
 
As an initial dose I think it's a bit high. My DN started me off with one tablet, then two after a couple of weeks and so on. In my case I had an adverse side effect of "taste disturbance" and came off them before I got to high dosage so I never completed the process.

I think it is an okay dose for you size, maybe a high dose to start with as most start the first 14 days on a lower dose , to let the body agree with what it is eating..

I think that metformin has helped me loose weight, but the most help in that was to go 1000 calories and lower carb right away... then after having lost 15 kg I started at fitness(burn 1800 calories a time x 3 a week ) and now usually eat around 1800-2200 calories a day but still loose weight..

Usually it starts at a lower dose and rises a bit at a time to help avoid some pretty unpleasant tummy problems. Diarrhea, mostly :-P
 
Hello @MP1982 And Welcome to the Forum :). Sometimes people are started of on 1 Metformin and then another is added and then another one added. Always take them with or just after food never on an empty stomach as they could give you upset stomach.
Metformin takes time to build up in your system and you might see a slight effect. But, just be patient and allow it to work. Ask away any questions you may have. :)
 
Many thanks for all the replies. I been told to take only one tablet with breakfast for first week then next week one with breakfast and one with dinner. If I don't get any side effects in first two weeks then two tablets with breakfast and two with dinner. I need to lose a lot of weight so I hope this and healthy lifestyle will help me.

Do you use your meter to test before eating and again 2 hours after first bite? Looking at the difference between your before and after reading will tell you if that meal had too many carbs for your body to cope with. By keeping a food diary including portion sizes, and recording your levels alongside, you will see patterns emerging. This will allow you to adjust the carb portion sizes downwards, or eliminate certain ones completely. We call this "eating to your meter".

The more carbs you eat the higher your blood glucose levels will be. It is that simple. ;)

Metformin is a useful drug if you are overweight as it is an appetite suppressant. However, its effects on blood glucose are minimal, mainly helping to reduce the amount of natural glucose your liver produces and ejects in to your blood stream. Diet is the key.
 
Low carb is good for weight loss and Metformin can sometimes reduce the appetite so again good for weight loss.A lot here follow the LCHF diet.. low carb high fat....it does not suit everyone and is not the official advice given by the NHS for diabetics so for those that do it it is a personal choice
