Hiya

Just wondering if anyone else felt worse if they had symptoms of illness before going lower carb ? I've been on this 2 weeks now and I feel drained and spaced and i have found out I more than likely have fatty liver . Non alcohol related. Just need to see roughly if this is normal ? Sometime I feel my heart rate going (not sure if just anxiety it extra tired causing it ) drowsy and is this Carb flu ?

Are you eating enough? You need to be eating enough to satisfy your appetite. I think the mistake a lot of people make when they first switch to a low carb way of eating is to cut carbs out of their diet and not replace them with something else. You really need to eat plenty of good fats.

Once you are settled and comfortable on a low carb way of eating - it took me about six weeks - then you can fine tune it to suit your lifestyle and preferred foods.

I don't know about the amount of fat weight wise but I've been doing this two weeks and am part way through my second block of butter and onto my third tub of double cream (or maybe even my fourth!). Two blocks of Stilton and a 500g block of cheddar plus about 250g of grated Mozzarella- hubby has had some of the cheese but only about 25%.

Edited to add in the cheese!

You need fat for energy .. I did go to 20g of carbs a day .. but reduced to this over a few weeks as I did not want to cause problems with my eyes .. (my vision went odd when my sugars were high, so reduced carbs and increased fats slowly) How many carbs are you eating a day and are you eating all full fat foods ?

At the beginning I ignored quantity of fat because after a life time of low fat/high carb dieting the whole eat lots of fat concept really went against everything I thought I knew. I just went for it - I had a couple of weeks of being as close to zero carbs as possible with lots and lots of fats then introduced a little veg and salad. I'm not recommending the zero carbing of those first two weeks but I definitely recommend eating lots of good fats until you are over the conversion to running on fat bit.

Are you getting enough salt? Drinking enough?
Sometimes a cup of broth or bovril will work wonders.

And I would agree about the fat.
Try increasing it for a day and see if you feel better.

Have a google for 'common low carb mistakes' and have a read of the articles that pop up.

We ALL get our intake unbalanced sometimes - I've been doing this for AGES and I still get it wrong sometimes, so it pays me to read these kind of articles regularly. :)

I agree with the others. I have seen some of your other threads where you have detailed some of your meals and noticed you are carefully measuring things like butter and mayo almost as though you are frightened of them. Maybe you could increase these and as Brunneria says, make sure you are getting enough salt this is important for low carbers. Drinking loads is also important.

Yes its been hard to get rid of the fat phobia lol. I was also wondering about calories ? Do we need to count them as my fitness pal said I can't eat more than 1500 odd cals to lose 1 lb a week...

I have to admit I counted calories as well as carbs and protein and fat, and I lost all my weight (33% of my body weight) doing that, but at the time I wasn't on very low carb. My energy was coming from carbs, not from dietary fat. I think it is different if you are on very low carb. If you have very little glucose in your body you need to replace that with dietary fat or you will become tired, lethargic, and have no energy. You have no fuel to create that energy.

Perhaps you could just give it a try for a couple of weeks and see what happens and how you feel. Once your body becomes fat adapted you should feel a whole lot better. If not, then try something else.

I never counted calories just carbs and ate lots of fats .. but I am vegetarian so zero carbs are impossible for me as all veg have carbs LOL still lost 6st in a year ...and my eyes are back to being normal :) happy days
I was scared of fats to start with, but my heart failure nurse is very happy with my new way of eating (LCHF) and says my heart sound great..

Thanks what else other than lchf helps blood sugar though as far as im aware this is it eh lol.I put my food diary up for someone to look at

With ME/CFS, I've really had to prioritize immediate health over weight loss. There are simply some days where my body does something crazy and I either need to eat more or I'll crash. So first and foremost I give my body what it needs at the time, and I don't worry about calories until I'm doing better.

Plan on having days off from a diet, especially since you have CFS as well. It's never going to be simple, so all we can do is accept that and work around it as best we can. The other thing is to avoid behavior that will increase hunger. Too much activity (pretty much any) tips me over the edge, and I either have to eat too much or crash. I choose to eat too much, and don't lose weight that day, but then I'm feeling okay in the following days and can get back on track with food. Basically - good pacing can help with avoiding excess hunger.

The other thing is that getting on a proper low-carb high-fat diet is a pretty good hunger quencher. Fruit (not berries) is absolutely awful for causing blood sugar spikes, which can also cause further cravings for me. Similar with the processed grains. So replacing those pure carbs with fats, or carbs which have proteins and fats in them, probably could help with hunger.

Regarding the fat phobia, it can help to keep in mind that the human body needs fats and proteins, far more than it needs carbs. Fats are used to keep our cells healthy, and proteins for our muscles. Some fats do have a bad reputation, but the right kinds of fats don't really have a downside.

Finally, it might be a good idea to set your weight loss goal to be slower. Instead of 1 pound per week, you could eat a bit more and aim for half a pound per week. That's still 2 pounds per month, or about 25 pounds per year. That's nothing to sneer at, especially if it means that you aren't suffering in the process.

Yes, I agree - wait until you are comfortable with low carbing before trying to lose weight. Best do only one thing at a time. :)

Thanks. I lost like 4 lbs In the 2 weeks I have been on it 3 lb 1st week nothing last week and 1 lb this week well I've been on it like 16 or 17 days
