I had a feeling that today was going to a good day .. and how right I was .. ;)

Following on from the saga of my cancelled appointment with the DN and my first appointment with my Doc, I'm pleased to say that today, it all went the other way .. BOOOOOM!!

I had an appointment with another Doc at the surgery for a completely unrelated matter. He had all my med records open and, after dealing with my minor issue, he asked me how I was getting on with my "named" Doc in terms of my T2. Not wishing to pour any "oil on water", I sort of mumbled, "well OK, I guess - but ..." and, instantly, he came back with, "you can see any doctor, you know .. all you have to do is ask .. you could see me for instance for your next review". I have seen this Doc several times before and I'm quite comfortable with him but worrying thoughts of crossing professional lines, closely followed by the rattle of frying pans and fires, came to mind. These were quickly dispelled, though, when I heard the words "testing" and "meter" and "LCHF". This sounded pretty much like the opposite of what I had reluctantly begun to believe was the norm that would determine the nature of my ongoing treatment. Then, after just a few minutes of further conversation, it turns out that this "wonder Doc" is a strong advocate of pro-active strategies for diabetes management and control .. including everything that I am trying to follow. He also believes that T2, while not necessarily reversible, can be controlled to a point where HbA1c and BG levels are consistently within non-diabetic ranges and no meds are required to maintain them.

Well, I thought, that'll do for me. My next review is in early June so, watch this space ..

Happy, Happy ... :D:D

Pleased to hear it. They are out there, just needs a bit of looking and a bit of luck. I also had a very good telephone chat with my GP today. She's more than willing to discuss strategy now that low carb isn't enough to keep my BG down. Insulin production is OK as of January 2017, insulin resistance a different matter.

People who think they know everything.
We had a locum doc once who had done the Newcastle diet herself and had come off her insulin and other meds and was (at the time I saw her) keeping control with LCHF. It was a breath of fresh air and I hoped she'd be around for a while. Sadly she only stayed a week.

Did you ask if he himself is diabetic or a family member?
All I found out that he is a close friend/colleague of another doctor in the area (different surgery) who apparently has had great success over several years with reversal/remission/control for his diabetic patients

Southport ??

Yes, a GP who works in Southport. He is a leading light in low carb approach to diabetes. He calls in the forum from time to time.
He conducted trials on his diabetes patients using low carb and had amazing success. He has written papers and won at least one award. I wondered if he is the GP that your GP knows as I see you are from West Lancs. Have a look at his profile and his past posts.

That's good. The one good thing about our surgery is that there are two specialist diabetic GPs. One is my named GP and advocates the old ways. The other pointed me this way (carefully). My own GP only works Monday and half of Tuesday. The other is available Fridays. 'Luckily' I'm only able to arrange appointments Friday afternoons. My next appointment is this week and I'm expecting further support since my BP and BG are heading in the right direction, and I've lost 10kg. The message is out there, its just unfortunate that its still too rare. One thing though, I'm half expecting the Gliclazide to be removed (I'm on very low dose) and the test strips to be removed at the same time. The reason given will be 'you've had enough time to learn what foods you tolerate' but will really be 'it costs us too much'. Oh well, can't have everything.

Don't worry about whether you see your 'named doctor' - it's only a box ticking exercise - all patients have to have a named doctor (like in the olden days when you were registered with a particular doctor) - it just means that if any queries come in stuff goes to the named doctor and if they leave/retire the surgery has to name another one.
