Should I have a completely low carb diet or can I eat normal by counting carbs and using rapid acting insulin in takeaways at the weekend could I have a fizzy drink once a week as a treat instead of diet or could I have Choclate and crisps if I cover the carbs with insulin or is it just really important to have a stricked low carbon diet.

Thanks

Hi @Alistatir_ are you on fixed doses of bolus insulin or have you been shown carb counting by your DSN yet? You can have what you like, when you like with Type 1 diabetes (within reason of course).

If you are on fixed doses you will hopefully soon be shown carb counting and given a starting ratio of insulin to carbohydrates. You can always ask to be shown this if you like and should if it's not offered to you soon enough after diagnosis and starting your regime.

Hi I have been T 1 for 13 yrs. I always count my carbs. I also am on the omnipod. I don't see any harm myself in eating the odd delicacy as long as I dose for it and watch my levels. I too like the odd take away (who doesn't when they don't want to cook). I would recommend you download the carbs and cals app. It's my bible lol x

Hi! Keeping your carb intake low will help when it comes to maintaining a good blood glucose level, but! What sort of a life is it when you deny yourself a treat? a takeaway, whatever. If you can avoid too much sugar, especially fizzy drinks, then great. I actually prefer diet coke or coke zero to the regular but each to their own. Just keep a close eye on your blood sugars and adjust your fast acting insulin to suit but try to count the carbs as accurately as you can to avoid going too high or low.

Thanks for the reply I have been learning the carb counting the last 4 weeks and my diet has been very much the same everyday so I want to enjoy my food again and thought it would be quite safe if I dose correctly for it. Thanks

Thanks I got the app last week I was under the impression that my meals would be basic but there's even easter eggs in the app and wondered if I can explore more with carb counting

I used to really enjoy food and now feel a bit put off but quite happy to have a healthy balanced diet through the week as long as I can have a treat at the weekend.

You should still enjoy your food. Just be super aware of what you're eating, the carbohydrates going in and how fast they act on your blood sugars. How frequently you eat a take away or drink a full sugar fizzy drink is down to you. Don't feel bad when you do have a treat but remember it is a treat and make them infrequent, both for your diabetes and your general health.
