It depends. Fasting is especially helpful for those of us who have weight to lose and not on any medication that are likely to cause hypoglycemia, eg insulin and sulfonylureas (glipizide).

This may be helpful to clear up some common queries on fasting.

Who should NOT fast?
You should not fast if you are:

  • Underweight (BMI < 18.5)
  • Pregnant – you need extra nutrients for your child.
  • Breastfeeding – you need extra nutrients for your child.
  • A child under 18 – you need extra nutrients to grow.
You can fast, but may need supervision, under these conditions:

  • If you have diabetes mellitus – type 1 or type 2.
  • If you take take prescription medication.
  • If you have gout or high uric acid.

Sorry have to disagree.. I have been investigating different fasting regimes for about 18 months and have had great success with it. Also cut out as many carbs as possible from my diet (virtually all). I see on another post you mention balancing starch with protein.. I would say you'd be better off cutting out starch wherever possible.. it has no real nutritional value. Replace starch with natural fats avocado, olives, eggs, meat, fish, cheese, butter and cream.

Yes I eat some veg.. only above ground grown leafy or cauliflower type. Nothing from below ground and nothing starchy. So my carbs from veg intake is usually pretty low.
I have done a no plant month without any problems too though.
