Need help what to do

Hi

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and doctor has prescribed me metaform 500mg tablet , but I haven't still started them. My hb1ac was 7.3 on fasting. For past two days I m taking measurements and here it is
Before food 5.2 and after 2hrs of food 7.2. I m just wondering if I will still take medicine or wait until Monday for another GP appointment, please advise and suggest.

HbA1c is measured by a blood test and covers the average of the last 3 months.

Finger prick just tells you your BG at the moment of the test.

I assume your 7.3 on fasting is first thing in the morning?
This does suggest diabetes.
Why do you not want to take Metformin?

First of all , Thanks for your very quick reply. The reason I m not taking thinking that it will lower the blood sugar more , may go down normal level. Will it cause any problems? And also as I understand once you start meditation you will have to take for the rest of life. So was thinking if diet and exercise can keep me under control without medication?

Was the 7.3 an HbA1c test? Or was it simply a plasma blood glucose test?

It makes a big difference.

Your rise from 5.2 to 7.2 after eating was OK, but what did you eat for that meal as that is important to know.

We can't advise you about whether to take your medication. That can only be your decision. However, I can tell you once you start medication there is NO reason why it should be forever. I have no idea where you get that thought from. Many members on here started off with medication and now no longer need it because they have brought their blood sugar levels under control with a suitable diet and are able to maintain this.

Many people here who have taken metformin for quite some time no longer do so. Also metformin especially at the low dose you have been prescribed will not have such a dramatic affect on blood sugar levels as you would imagine. Having normal levels is what we all wish for.

Must add Metformin can be a little discomforting when taken at first do not be deterred by that unless it persists.

Probably a good idea to take anything doctor prescribes and only stop if it causes problems. Your doctor has obviously diagnosed a problem and acted accordingly. Not taking his/her advice will not make him/her your best friend. I recommend telling your GP exactly what you're thinking, they might actually agree with you.

Not true, although I believe some GPs might suggest diabetes medication is for life and that it is a progressive disease (also untrue, although it can be if we let it) When I lowered my carb intake, I avoided going on to insulin and threw away Gliclazide and Januvia (diabetic drugs to increase insulin production) and atorvastatin (lowers cholesterol). The reason being that both my BG and cholesterol had dropped significantly as a result of my new dietary regime. Doctors frequently tell you to eat sensibly, so I did, in my case a lot less carbs than recommended.

It's always worth telling your GP absolutely everything and you will have noticed that a lot of forum members are doing quite well by lowering their carb intake. Not something every GP likes to hear but they are beginning to realise that some of their patients can actually stick to strict (?) regimes and aren't returning to their former ways, whatever that was.

Welcome to the forum @biren1973. Stay on the medication until you are advised otherwise. Make sure you are ready to stop the course of medication and stay healthy. Don't take chances. Good luck with your results.
