I have been doing my fasting blood test in the morning, after my cup of tea and getting dressed etc about and hour after waking up.

Today i took my meter upstairs with me, and did the test as soon as I had woken up and washed my hands.

There has been a 1 point drop from around 7.5 - 7.8 most days to 6.6 this morning.

Have I been doing my fasting test wrongly previously? My bedtime test was 11 last night - no idea why, i only had salad and ham for tea at around 6pm and nothing else before bed.

If you have been testing after your cup of tea, and if there is milk in this tea, then yes, the milk will have caused raised levels, or even the tea itself. It isn't a true fasting test. Fasting means just that. An empty stomach.

Showering and pottering about may also have caused raised levels as your liver will have kicked in.

I always test immediately after getting up, loo, wash hands. Before anything else.

However, consistency is what is needed. If you prefer to test when you do, then continue. It is only trends we are looking for, not numbers.

Did you re-test that bedtime 11?

We all get rogue readings from time to time. Meters only have to meet the accuracy guidelines 95% of the time. The other 5% they may meet the requirements, or they may not. Some strips can be contaminated without you knowing. You could have had a speck of dust/soap/whatever on your finger. Anything really. It is annoying, but it's all we have. If you see an unexpected reading that is well out of your normal range, it is always worth a re-test, and maybe even another.
