I have been lurking here for a bit , finally decided to join it’s a really informative place, and I’ve been learning a lot, but think I have a few questions to ask too. I am thin, my bmi is 20 , I am 5 foot 6 and about 125 pounds, I don’t like carbs , eat really quite healthy, but I found due to a recent hospital visit, my fasting blood sugar was7.8, and I’ve been told I need an hba1 blood test. So in my infinite wisdom I went and bought an accu- check monitor and found over the past couple of weeks my fasting blood sugar to be all over the place it ranges from 5.3 to 7.8 and I can’t quite find the logic to it. The GP said if the hba1 came back 48 or over then I would need treatment, she didn’t consider low carb diet as she said I couldn’t loose any more weight and my lifestyle didn’t fit that plan. Actually I don’t feel well either , I m exhausted all the time, have a headache most days,. So what would be the likely treatment and if I am not a TOFI then could I be a weird type 1. Or maybes I am just weird,!
TIA

You don't seem to be over weight.
What is your waist measurement?
As a guide it should be no more than half your height. That is, 66" tall so 33" waist.

Fasting BG of 7.8 is high for a non-diabetic.
Also, there is generally not a lot of logic in fasting BG because the liver sometimes dumps glucose into the blood over night. However a correct insulin response should bring it down again quite quickly.

Edit: oh, welcome by the way.:) @daisy1 for newbie welcome.

Little grey cat , thank you for that, my waist is 28 inches. Yes I thought 7.8 was a bit high too , it was 7 yesterday and 6.6 day before, but it is reassuring that you say there isn’t a lot of logic to the fasting glucose anyway! I suppose I just have to wait for the blood results, just a thought, though if a correct insulin response should bring it down does that mean I’m just testing too early ?

I can understand your worry, but you need to wait for the result before doing anything else drastic.
The morning fasting test can be very unreliable. A better indication is to test before your main meal and again 2 hours after first bite - any rise should be as low as possible.

You eat healthily and don't like carbs - but do you eat fruit and fruit juices? That can be a major contributor to a fatty liver, and it is fatty livers that are one of the root causes of high fasting levels.

Welcome to the forum, and ask as many questions as you like.

Bluetit thanks for this, unfortunately I don’t really like fruit and juice very much , ( that would ha e been a great reason!) almost wish I did?
But life has been really quite stressful the last year or so, could that have an effect?

Yes, stress is a major factor, although food is the biggest factor.

Just as a matter of interest, what do you normally eat in a typical day if carbs and fruit are off the menu?

Ha ha, na although we live in Scotland, I don’t like porridge ( my hubby loves it! He’s actually much more the type 2 candidate, he loves all carbs, drinks juice, and I’m the one with the not normal blood sugar!!! Not fair) but who said life was fair?

Well, it seems you do most of the right things. All you can do is wait for the results and take it from there.
