Hello, I work in a kitchen & to cut down on 'picking' I've started chewing gum sugar free but I'm getting high readings. Will the gum be causing this?

Hi,

Just a thought... The stress of working in a busy kitchen could be triggering liver dumping glycogen? Thus high BS...

Hi, how do I deal with this? Any thoughts would be great.

Well? Dificult at the moment... You have your thread tagged as type 1. But your profile says T2? (So, not sure about your meds..)
As a T1 myself. I'd take a correction dose of insulin..

How high are your readings?

I am type 1 my readings when not working are between 7/9 but when working & chewing gum 17/19 to high but work is busy & I certainly can't stop during service to check levels usually wait till I'm home.Just trying to keep weight off it sometimes seems a vicious circle

You could try a google search for the nutritional information and ingredients list for your chosen brand of gum. Be aware that a lot of 'sugar free' foodstuff contains sugar alcohols in small quantities.

Just out of interest, if you are cooking in a restaurant how do manage to taste test your foods when chewing (minty?) gum?

OK? I've done a little waiting in my time & understand how things can slip in a busy restaurant..
I'm thinking of other causes bar the chewing gum? Like under bolusing for food on a break, or over milking the "coffee glugs" on a shift... It's easy to overlook while it's all going on...

I've usually chewed the gum so long that there's no taste left !! It's just to keep my 'grazing in check'
