Lengthen NovoRapid time

Quick question is it possible to length the time NovoRapid lasts in the system? I know the average shot is supposed to peak between hours 1-2 and typically the shot is out of steam by about 4-5 hours. Question I'm asking is can I make that last for an extra hour or 2 by taking an additional 2-3 units and then having a small snack in-between hours to stop a low? Used to be able to do this on the 30/70 regime.
 
Novorapid peak time is roughly 75 mins, as you note, and typically it takes between 5 and 7 hours to get fully out of your system. Taking more doesn't really lengthen the duration of the action, so that approach wouldn't work.

I guess the question is "Why are you looking to do that?"...
 
What are you trying to achieve?
There may be someone on the forum who can suggestion a different approach.

Because around the 5-8pm my sugars start to raise, I can only assume that this is the Lantus running out as I usually take the Lantus around 8pm with my evening meal NR shot, taking any more Lantus would cause lows around the 4-6am mark. So was wondering if I could add a couple more units in afternoon NR shot.

Not really, no. The alternative is to either split you lantus does to make it twice daily and try to achieve a flatter profile, or to ask for Levemir, which generally manages split doses much more effectively.
 
no taking extra would not make it last longer as peak times would remain the same no matter how many units you take :)
 
There are people that do do a small shot of rapid acting insulin to counteract the effect of basal running out - not ideal but if it works then fine, but most don't pre-inject before the rise like you were suggesting (just in case the rise doesn't happen!).

The optimum solution is to get a basal regime that works though. You may want to do a basal test to provide evidence to your HCPs and together you can change things.
