Alison Teadstone of PHE fame has decreed that we all have to go on a diet. It's about time but I have great concerns about how this will progress. She says that processed foods should be targeted and the food manufacturers should be asked to re-formulate with higher quality ingredients with a view to lowering calories. She also wants smaller portions.

When the BBC ran the report this morning I heard a commentator say, "I never understood why food had to have so much salt and fat in it anyway" which totally misses the point.

I think that from here on there will be a battle between those who understand and want a change of culture and those who think it is just re-enforcing old ideas about salt and fat. Confusingly Alison Teadstone seems to fall into neither camp.

I find her condescending and fairly ignorant.. which is an interesting combo. I tend to scream at the radio when she is on...
 
The annoying thing with her is that she's partly correct in that highly processed pap isn't good and we should all go back to eating identifiable food that we make ourselves from raw ingredients. But then she goes all calories in calories out and doesn't appreciate that "fat" per se isn't BAD as she makes out. I guess she's just the embodiment of the Eatwell Guide which kind of explains her position.. halfway there but not quite all there.
 
I don't think she has mentioned fat yet, it was one of the news commentators who did and by so doing showed his understanding of what the campaign is about. It seems to me that there might be a lot of others who see it in the same way. The low fat no salt culture is ingrained in people too deeply and they might think that this is just the same old same old.

Especially in her case when her job kind of depends on towing the party line..

When I have seen her interviewed she gave me the impression she was waiting for her pension and wasn't going to consider any changes that could be controversial in the meantime.
 
Ok found it and only screamed a bit when the FDA guy was on.. and sighed when Dr T went on about sugar, salt and sat fat..
Great question from presenter about what they will replace the 20% of calories they are taking out with.. sawdust lasagne anyone? Not really answered though. Hey ho

Not precisely. I watched the news from 6 onwards but it wasn't the first item. I also watched The Briefing and the subject came up there also but I feel certain it was the news where the comment was made.

Oh OK she was on Radio 4 today prog at 8:50 I didn't realise she was on the telly as well!
 
Ggggrrrr @ middle class twaddle. For folks who are at the lower end of the income spectrum, every penny counts. Teadstone, and other wealthy scroungers off the state don't have to budget, those on Universal Credit (or still waiting for it) do! For them the likes of pasta, potatoes, and wheat based products are cheap, and filling. They cannot afford a cauliflower at £1 a pop. The carby stuff is cheap because it is heavily subsidized by the tax payer - possibly to reinforce the 'eatwell plate'?
Rather than patronize, why not shift the balance by taking subsidy off bread and putting it on lettuce and toms?
