Type 1 Tired all the time

Type of diabetes
Type 1
Treatment type
Insulin
I’ve been type 1 for about 6 weeks now, and though my levels have settled down a lot since the start, I just constantly always feel tired.

I haven’t got consistently high blood sugar like I did before. For the most part they are within range.

Is this a ‘normal’ thing or something I should mention to my DSN?

I sleep rather well and don’t tend to wake up or if I do it’s only for a few mins and then I’m asleep again, yet I still feel exhausted all the time constantly yawning and bleh feeling!

I go to the gym a few times a week and eat a fairly balanced diet.

Is my body just still trying to recover from before my diagnosis?

Thanks!

From my own experience I'd say no, it's not a normal thing, especially if your blood glucose is in range. I would definitely mention it to your GP/DSN.

But if you're going to the gym, are you eating enough of the right food?

Hi and hope you start to feel better soon because this sounds very debllitating and you look so young.
This is worth mentioning to a doc as perhaps there could be other reasons for tiredness? e.g. iron deficiency, lack of B vitamins. Your metabolism has changed and it is not as simple as replacing your own insulin with the injected kind.
Or is it emotional overload from having to think about all of this all of the time?
Or were you underweight as a result of your diabetes and are now regaining the weight in which case your body is trying to get you to expend less energy in order to get back to its preferred weight.

Just a few guesses but don't accept things as your new 'normal' because it does not sound right. I get tired too but this is usually if I have mega blood sugar swings or wake up with a low ish reading.
Good luck and I hope you get some ideas from other folk here too.

When I was a teenager I was slightly anaemic but just had to take liquid iron medicine bought from the shops but as I got older it went away.

I’m only 22 and obviously recently diagnosed, I lost 4 1/2 stone in weight in 10 months leading up to my diagnosis and was always tired then but now knowing that was due to my undiagnosed diabetes.

Someone above said that since I go to the gym am I eating enough to combat it, and I make sure I eat a banana or something before and then have something to eat afterwards.

For the last few years I’ve been on medication for generalised anxiety, so maybe this sudden change has worn me out?

I’ll mention it to my DSN and see what she says I guess.

I don’t let It stop me from doing what I want. I work in a nursery so that involves lots of running around after children! I guess I’ve just gotten used to doing things with no energy but it would be nice to not be yawning all the time and not feel tired.

Thanks

What were the circumstances of your diagnosis? Were you in dka when diagnosed 6 weeks ago? If so, that could certainly explain feeling exhausted when euglycaemic. DKA is fatal and is a big shock for your body to recover from.

No DKA, just was drinking excessive amounts of water and my boyfriend advised me to get checked out, I had a blood test and the next day I got sent to hospital to get insulin immediately. I did have ketones of 3, but wasn’t unwell or anything

If you are just having a banana before the Gym. that is not really enough. Eat some Protein..Eggs, meat with some fat on..Eggs bacon with a side salad full of green leafy veg. Tuna with 3 boiled eggs, nuts etc A banana is nothing hun x

Re the gym (I am a trainer btw), what are you doing? If its cardio lasting more than 30 minutes I might suggest doing a few more weights!
You should leave feeling tired but refreshed and not in immediate need of a lie down.
A banana plus some nut butter might be a good solution AFTER your workout as this won't derange your blood sugars too much but do a test to check your response.
If you are feeling physically wrecked before you even get there then the workout could be counterproductive. Feeling mentally drained is the opposite though and I guess that being with little people all day needs to be balanced by you time!

I do quite a lot of cardio I think.

The current plan I’ve got which I’ve had for a while is doing:

10 mins treadmill,
10 mins elliptical,
800M alternating normal pace then fast rowing machine,
Then 500m fast sprint on rowing machine,
15 mins stationary bike,
25 reps of stomach crunch (not sure what the machine is called).

Then on the floor mats I do:
15 sit & twists with 10kg weight
15 sit ups
20 mountain climbers

Repeat 2 or 3 times

10mins treadmill again to end.

Sometimes I miss something if I am short for time or only want a quick workout but that’s the plan I’ve been following for a while when I asked for a gym plan. (Although that was pre diagnosis) I feel good during and shortly after my workouts. But then I drop down and by the time I’ve driven home and showered I can easily (and if I’m not doing anything else) will go for a nap for around 2 hours.

What’s good to eat pre workout?

I don't think anyone here are doctors, so, take their advice including my own with a grain of salt. That being said, have you lost a lot of weight or have you been under a lot of stress? If so, your cortisol could be high. Just a thought to check your hormones. May as well get them all checked at the same time. Save you a trip to the doctors office.

Hi have you been tested for an under active thyroid, that makes you unbelievably tired, once treated with thyroxine your energy starts to return but it takes 6/7 weeks.Ask your doctor for a blood test.
