Interesting new piece from Dr Zoe Harcombe

Indeed, a very interesting piece (and you don't have to be a member to read it), which says it loud and clear, KEEP AWAY FROM CARBS and from factory made vegetable oils.
It is why I don't regard the way we live (very low carb) as a special diet to keep the demon Diabetes away, but see it as a healthy human diet, reducing our chances of all sorts of nasties and keeping lots of little irritations firmly in their box. My husband's former diabetes is not "under control", it's simply not invited to the party.

Annoyingly just realised my favourite mayo is made from sunflower oil so that's going in the bin.. will have to start making my own!

I just need my husband to read it. He does his best, but will not give up his breakfast cereal and bread. At least he threw out all cooking oils and pretend butter and converted to solid animal fats. (he is the cook in our household)

Thanks - seems to echo other findings that eating those 'healthy wholegrains' and low fat stuff is especially bad for us girls.
Interested as to why only eggs were correlated with better CV health in the American countries versus the European ones where many other animal food groups were positively correlated? Maybe to do with consumption of grain fed beasts?
I have done a couple of food talks to diabetics recently and I would say that people get the message about sugar but have no ideas about carbohydrates turning into more bg than sugar and are still very reluctant to eat more fat e.g. I eat really healthily - low fat cheese on crispbreads, porridge with skimmed milk... do not understand how I got diabetes etc...
They would be flabbergasted to hear that smoking is only slightly more correlated with CVD than is high consumption of grains!
 
Ome particular point of interest for me was that in her list of
"Strongest negative relationships(*) -‘Helpful’ for Euroean women", fruit (-0.72), and particularly oranges (-0.74) were included, yet we are currently being banged on the head about fructose in relation to fatty liver, so it would appear that I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't... :banghead: So I shall just continue to do as I've always done as with full fat foods, and continue eating my low carb fruit in moderation - but now without a guilty concience.

That fortunately was one of my very first revelations regarding types of food to avoid, after simply being told by my DN a few weeks previously that I must avoid sugar, then doing a little research!

I thought the best bit was the negative correlation with cholesterol across all countries.

It seems more and more that Malcom Kendrick was quite right with his "cholesterol con" idea. And now backed up by more and more research. Cummings, Malhotra et al...

I've probably mentioned this before, but my father suffered from angina in his mid-forties, and followed what was meant to be a very healthy lifestyle for the following decade, eating ultra low fat, and loads of fibre and carbohydrates.

10 years later he dies of a massive heart attack.

The message that "carbs are gonna kill us" is 100% true in my opinion.

Exactly, as a newly diagnosed person who likes to think I have a modicum of intelligence when it comes to nutrition, I was shocked when I realised there were 3 teaspoons of sugar in wholemeal bread or 3 in an apple or 300 in a bowl of pasta (well you get my drift). Nobody would spoon 3 teaspoons of pure sugar down their throats as a diabetic but that is exactly what people are doing without realising.
 
I recently was speaking with another type two about self testing. I mentioned that only whenI started did I realized which food spiked my BG and knew to avoid them.
He said he knew because he also has tested and everything spiked his BG even bananas. So didnt see the point.
I think for many they don’t realize that we have the power to change how we feel and we can prevent progression.
 
Going with the "make your own Mayo" and the issues with various "oils", what would the oil of choice be to make your own Mayo. I was thinking ground nut oil but it's probably as processed as all the rest.... :(
 
This is one of those interesting articles that reminds me of Wheatbelly. I wonder what the correlation between cereals and markers is if highly propagated and modified wheat is removed from the equation?

avocado I guess... or olive if you like the flavour. I also have some macadamia nut.. need that blender!
 
Ummmm...........worrying stuff.

The message seems to be that eating meat in the Americas isn't good for you (knowing why would be useful) but that eating carbohydrates in the Americas isn't particularly bad for you (again further study needed). In fact only eggs in the Americas were beneficial. Not sure if this is skewed by data from S. America.

What a massive divide between the Americas and Europe. Is it the diet or is it the type of studies?
