Aseem Malhotra talking to Jeremy Vine...

"Taxing the working man" does the caller understand that everyone, working or not pays VAT?
Another caller spoke of treats, the point is that these treats are being eaten every day, they are no longer treats but part of every day diet alongside the highly processed foodstuffs of meals.

It is the sheer amount of sugar (and of course, the overall carb intake) that is fuelling this nation's epidemic of ill health. The sugar tax is a baby step towards better health but much, much more needs to be done.

I think we all live in an echo chamber on this site with regards to sugar and carbs so it is very interesting to hear what the 'man on the street; thinks! Very much approve of Dr Malhotra and all efforts to stop my working woman's tax contributions being spent on the entirely preventable downstream effects of bad diet and despite being a liberal at heart I do want a nanny state to shape people's choices in the face of big pharma/food marketing budgets that would have us all bear the costs of getting sick.

At the moment it seems that even a good diet is questionable, in my eyes anyway. Is the bad diet you refer to the one that a lot of diabetics are recommended by their GP or DN. I'm not sure how many people read this or similar forums, but I would hazard a guess and say a small percentage of the total number of diabetics in the UK, 3.8 million in 2016 (as an example). A lot of forum members have found great results in low carb, try getting the rest of the 3.8 to cut back on spuds/pasta/rice/bread. I can see the list of excuses now, I heard friends and relatives explain how they couldn't give up this that or the other.

To me, fortunately, a no brainer. Eat carbs, take more meds, be ill again and die early. Alternative, reduce carb consumption till BG isn't a problem, in my case some protein as well and hopefully live longer and healthier.
