Went to see the nurse for my diabetes review and HbA1c result today and my level was 45. I was happy with that but the nurse said that NHS guidelines for T2's have changed and now the HbA1c levels and what to aim for are based on age and for older people they should aim for an HbA1c level of no lower than 50. She has taken me off the Metformin...I was only taking 500g SR once a day anyway... and wants me to have another HbA1c blood test in 3 months to see if that has made any difference...she did not tell me to eat starchy carbs to bring it up though and she has never told me to eat low fat

My guess is that the target is really for people taking stronger medication than Metformin. A balance between running at a higher HbA1c but avoiding a risk of hypos is probably their logic.

Another point.
What about an elderly person being first diagnosed with an HbA1c of 48? Would she expect him to raise it deliberately?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't your own HbA1c very low on diagnosis?

Just read a bit on the American diabetic association page, they talk about raising targets for the elderly who may have dementia and go low because they forget to eat, or can't afford to eat. Those who are on lots of meds which may cause lows.
