Those of you who know me (or at least recognise my Avatar and whatever stories I make up to amuse you) will know, I have been T2D on oral meds for about 15 years now, Three years ago I was being referred to the Diabetic consultant for insulin therapy since my daily bgl meter readings were often off scale, and all my meter would say to me was KETONES, (just like that, in caps how rude). That was when I decided to do things about it, and I started the Low Carb path that I am still following today.
Cut to today and my annual diabetic review. My HbA1c was 42 for the 3rd time, and the DN comment was its too low, To which I answered Ballcocks, So I explained Low Carb and how it was working for me and my fellow oral companions, and we noted that my BP was now no longer over 200 / 90 but a more respectable 130 / 70 for the 3rd successive review. And this is after reducing my diabetic and BP meds significantly this last 2 years. So I mentioned that I had just cut out one of my Metformins, and my bgl has only risen by 0,3 mmol.l, and she started to become interested, My bgl seemed to be going in the righ direction for her so should raise my HbA1c next time (to what level she did not allude) bur I pointed out that my GP had set me a target of 7.0 mmol.l, which I believe equates to 42 exactly. So I ticked his box, which he marked as Normal rather than satisfactory.
So my Cholesterol was high this time Tut Tut - statin time. Nope! we did not discuss it at all. I explained that it was not a fasting test, and that I had eaten a full English Breakfast just before the Flea Whatsit took my blood (phlebotomist, perchance?) so I for one was not surprised that my LDL rose a bit. My other blood markers were all showing much the same as they usually do, so no surprises there,
The one elephant in the room was in the urine test results. My sample was full of microalbumin as high as Dr Google says it is indicative of End Stage Renal Failure, and considered Terminal and Fatal. Now I had already discussed this with my GP, and we did a re-test , and that was Normal. But it was not in the records for the review, so we had to search for them and get a printout. So it was a very good review. My weight has been logged as stable too, although the DN did note that I had dropped by 0,5kg since last year, and this may be indicative of something - Yeah, my LC diet lost me nearly 8 stones, so I am not going to quibble about a couple of pounds in a year. Like I said, stable,
Part 2 of my day went better than expected. I have reached that venerable age where DVLA demand that I surrender my lovely paper licence, and try to get a brand new plastic card to fit in my wallet instead. Of course, to remain legal, I had to declare my health conditions including laser eye surgery and cataracts, so lo and behold I got back not plastic but a demand to go for an eye test ASAP, and so today was my Nemesis. I turned up and promptly had a hypo on their doorstep. Had to buy some donuts from the bakery next door and sit it out. When I came to do the flashing light test I had flashing lights before the test even started, but we progressed since time was running short. Then I had the Snellen chart test, and I could hardly see a thing, but we struggled through it. Finally the Optician was writing up the results, and I could see that my Field Of Vision results had one quadrant with problems. The Optician said I could repeat the test, but he was fairly confident it was within the legal allowance and should be ok, but that he could not discuss it with me any further. For my chart test he identified which line I had to meet, and I know I have exceeded the legal requirement. So it seems that where I thought I was finally to be relegated to being a peeing destrian, I may now get some useful photo ID for the first time in my life.
So a good day, and I finished up the pack of Donuts as a reward, God help my bgl tonight!, but I'm celebrating.
