Why Eat Carbs As A Type 2 Diabetic?

So Eating to meter is considered to be a sign of madness and mental instability? I think not.

Be proud! DSM-V means we're all crazy now!

But I've learned something new today. I'd not heard of Orthorexia, or realised it's potentially contagious. Wonder if there's grant money linked to that?

Contagious?

There's certainly grant money and a heap of funding going into services for eating disorders across the board, and the affected people are not "crazy." They have a medical condition, like diabetes is a medical condition, and IMHO they need support not ridicule.

Unlike anorexia and bulimia, orthorexia is not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the 'bible' of psychiatric conditions which clinicians use to diagnose mental illness in the US.

Neither is it included in the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Disease, the list of recognised conditions used in other countries, including the UK and Australia.

I can’t be bothered looking but is that true

So what?

The disorder was coined by the Dr Steven Bratman in a 1997 paper, in which he said sufferers could be driven to despair by inadvertently 'devouring a single raisin' in violation of internal guidelines.

But does he realise there’s carbs in raisins?

I didn't see anything in that article about eating to meter. Use of the terms "madness" and "mental instability" suggests you may have a different understanding of psychological disorders to mine. That's OK though.

Great article BTW, very helpful. Severe orthorexia is a very serious issue for those affected. I know of someone local to me who shows clear signs of it and who will not discuss it with anyone. The threshold for me to be concerned is when there are very obvious signs of severe health effects, such as persistent severe deficiencies or very low BMI despite efforts to address that over time. Her BMI is about 14, according to what she has told me. I can be concerned, but it is not appropriate for me to push the issue.
There is stubborn resistance to us T2D using SMBG and the reason is not given as cost, It is anxiety and leading to poor diet choices without the knowledge that nutritionists have about the various food groups, Therefore someone using SMBG must be mad, This is what I was given when my GP referred me to the nutrition consultant when I started an LC diet, But my DN supplied me with a meter and the rest is history, I am not yet history so think I made the right choice.

Like many on this forum, I am not alone and many of us use SMBG to steer our dietary course. I would not say they have an eating disorder simply because they report success with lifestyle changes they have made, and sometimes there is a tendency to become blinkered in this vision, but it is not IMO an eating disorder. It is a natural reaction to make claims such as My Dad is bigger than Your Dad, which is something that we learn in our school years, It manifests itself in politics, religion, sex life, cars etc. And yes, diets too/

Meters give us visibility into how we react to food in a way that was previously not available to anyone outside of a science lab, and this gives us control in a way that has been missing from nutrition advice in the past.

Edit to add: the main difference I see is that here we openly discuss dietary matters, and that has to be healthy. I consider the term orthorexia to be too strong to be applied here.

Sleep tight don’t let the bedbugs bite

I think he's right. Especially given the amount of diet and health advice that we're bombarded with, often contradictory. Combined with all the 'perfect body' and self-image challenges, it's hardly suprising some people end up with an obsession that's detrimental to their health.. And there's plenty of other recognised eating disorders related to specific foods, or non-food consumption.

But this is also a big challenge overcoming some preconceptions around diabetes, ie it's a self-inflicted lifestyle issue with a simple dietary fix, rather than weight gain being a symptom of a metabolic disorder.. Not necessarily the cause.

Great post.

Do bedbugs contain carbs? I gather munching spiders in our sleep is something I would not bolus for, but happens more often that we care to think about (apparently, according to folk myth)

How the hell do I turn off the beeping in my phone when a new message comes through?

Good night to you too. I'm on the other side of the world so no bed for me for about 14 hours. Unless of course conjugal rites are on offer.

I've been doing SMBG for 9 years. You are free to consider any term too strong to be applied on this forum. I am free to use whatever term I like, within the rules. Just as you are.

So it IS a disorder, then?

LOL. Night, sleep well.

Why eat carbs as a (type2) diabetic?

Probably for the same reason that people smoke or drink too much or eat ****. It may not be a person's wisest choice, but it is their personal choice. One might follow a regime that improves our "condition" whether it be lactose intolerance, gluten intolerance, wheat intolerance, carbohydrate intolerance and it's normal to expect others with the same condition to adapt the same regime, but it's up to them, we can't force them.
