Diabetic Living In Europe

Hi there,

I am a recently diagnosed Type 1 diabetic, and I’m looking at moving to Spain or Italy. I’m doing a TEFL at the moment so I can teach English abroad, and if that doesn’t work out, I might just work cash in hand in a bar.
I understand I will have to pay for my insulin and reader strips, and was wondering if anyone knows the cost implications monthly and how easy it is to get medication hassle free?

Really appreciate someone’s help with this.

I do not know anything about Italy. In Spain though, the health service is good, as well as lots of private clinics some of which are small private hospitals, which you can join for little per month and they have a 24 hour GP service. In these clinics you can see a GP and then if you need to see a consultant, the appointment is usually the same day or the next day. If you join one of these the cost depends on age etc. but you can then see the private GP's for free but would pay for the consultants. If you work your cards right, you see and get your medication from the health service just paying a little towards your medication but still have the private GP's for when there is an emergency. Of course if you were hospitalised in the private hospital you would pay but the cross over between health service and private is good. but Medication would be full price from the private section. You would at your age have to have health insurance for the health service and I cannot help with that cost.
