Hi all,
I was diagnosed type 1 end of February this year. I had a bad week being ill last week with the cold, sugars went sky high, really struggled to get control. My dietician wasn't too concerned today. Getting there slowly, struggle sometimes with this carb counting when out and about. For the first time today felt really down in the dumps and that this illness is controlling my life. I don't want that. Will this feeling pass? Dawn

Hey Dawn, welcome to the forums. It may take a while, but the feeling will pass eventually. Just take it one day at a time. Don't try to run before you can walk. It will take time to learn everything you need to learn, and to listen to your body's changing needs. I've found the best way to tackle the feeling that the diabetes is controlling you, is to educate yourself and learn as much as you can. That way, you're the one in control.

There is SO much help and support available here, it's the best resource possible. Keep coming back and asking questions!

I think we all still get it wrong sometimes. Quite often carb counting is guesswork, especially when out and about.
You'll get better at it though.

Hi @Dawn3010 ,

Feeling under the weather will certainly compound things. Then the high sugars will affect mood too.
It can be a double edged sword.

You will find your mojo!

Thanks Colin
Yes I know I'll get there I'm a strong cookie. Just feeling frustrated today and emotional.

Thanks Kaylee,
Feel better tonight from talking, I know I'll get there. It's awkward as they think I'm coming out of the honeymoon stage. What works one week doesn't work the next. Carb counting difficult sometimes not giving myself enough insulin then having to do a correction at next meal. Frustrated just now.

Keep going Dawn, I'm sure there are more questions than answers but you will pull things round once over that illness I'm sure.

Hello @Dawn3010 welcome to the forum.

Once you get the hang of things it won't "control your life" but yes in the beginning it is tricky with lots to learn but once you get head around it there is nothing to stop you :)

Will this feeling pass?
It probably will. It is maybe comparable to losing a loved one (although you supposedly didn't know you loved your pancreas until you noticed it's demise). In the beginning it's overwhelming, and after a period the anger, pain, frustration comes back once in while to remind you of how things have changed.
I don't think it will completely go away, but I can honestly say it's more or less an integrated part of life for me after almost 2 years. Occasionally I get still sad, frustrated, angry, lonely or all of them at the same time though.

Keep on keeping on, mate. Even the old farts get it wrong, and get super frustrated with this life. You’re doing so well, and there is always a lot to learn.

We have a very friendly and quite silly T1 thread here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/type-1stars-r-us.150597/page-250 where we share pretty much everything. Keeps me (semi) sane - none of us is perfect. Come and join in, no strangers, just friends you haven’t met yet :)

Hi Dawn3010,
Frequently when we get sick, D gets jealous and really plays up to make certain it's centre of attention. D gets us all down at times. With a bit of encouragement from here and assistance from your health support team if you are really down you will learn how to pick yourself up and keep going. Most of us here that D as minor inconvenience and keep going. We don't let D get in the road of much of what we do. A much older family member whom had D (in law) made D the centre of his life and everyone else whom was around him. When I got D I vowed not to be like him and every day I ensure that.
