Type 2 SGLT2 Inhibitors

I am after some information about SGLT2 Inhibitors. My son, 20, has been a type 2 for 8 years and been on Metformin SR and Lantus solostar. They have offered to try SGLT2 inhibitors or Glitazones but I don't know much about either of these or the long term effects and side effects..

Gosh - Your son was diagnosed T2 at 12? That's pretty young, although not entirely unknown, but I would have thought highly unusual 8 years ago.

There are a good number of people who get along very well with the SGLT2 inhibitor class of meds, but then there are also some for whom it isn't good news.

If you were to Google it, I'm sure you'd find a mixed bag.

It really is something warranting a good conversion with your son's medical team. If he is to take it, it is very important he has the equipment and supplies to test for ketones.

Assuming it is type2 I would recommend the "The Diabetes Code" book.

SGLT2 inhibitors are the only drug that remove the excess glucose from the body but there is an increased risk of DKA being undiagnosed so insure he understands the risk, how to reduce the risk, and the signs of DKA.

He was put on Metformin when he was 7 and then diagnosed with type 2 when he was 12 and has been on Lantus and Metformin since. They have ruled out him being a type 1 but dont think he is a typical type 2. However tests have not proven any other type. I am concerned about the DKA as he is a typical 20 year old who is probably still in denial and thinks he is invincible. Consequently he doesn't let me come to medical appts with him any more and is not very open to suggestions.

The other drug they mentioned was glitazone? again not something I know much about so any information is helpful

Your son is certainly bucking the trends as far as his diabetes in concerned, but is it fair to assume he is being looked after by a specialist Diabetes Centre?
