How many carbs per day is the limit ? How to work out carbs

How many carbs per day would people say (on average) is the limit to consume?

How many grams of carbs should I definetly not go over per day ?

And how many carbs should there be in a meal to be classed as low carb?

For example , my other half hates oily fish but likes these fish in sauce by youngs.

Looking at the breakdown, each pouch contains 6.3g carbs / 3.1g sugars.
So would would two of these for dinner with some vegetables be too much, or would it be fine?

I was thinking something like a cup of peas and cabbage alongside?

Also how am I calculating the carb in that meal ? If it says 6.3g of which 3.1g is sugar, is that a total value of 6.1g carbs + sugar, 6.3g total, or a combined total of 9.4g??

You can ignore the 'of which sugars' as this has already been added to the carb amount.

What would put me off these straight away is the big fat yellow 'Low Fat' label.

I did think that at first, but according to their nutritional breakdown
5.2g of carb per 100g / 6.3g of carb per portion.

So 2 portions would be 12.6g of carbs?

Is that acceptable? Low? High?

Depends on how your body responds to carbs and if you are type 1 or type 2 and if the latter, whether you take insulin.
If you are type 2, it depends on if you need to go very low carb and you need to test your blood glucose to establish this.
I am type 2, controlled by diet, and I eat under 20g carbs a day.
With the example you give, on uk food packets you use the number of carbs which in this case is 6.3.
So if you had 2 of these, it would be 12.6 g of carbohydrate for that meal plus whatever vegetables you are having. This would be a bit too much for me because I try to split my carb allowance over the day, e.g. 4,8,8.
So there are quite a few factors to consider, including exercise.

Generally speaking, under 130g of carbs per day is considered 'lower carb' however it depends very much on how many carbs you can tolerate as an individual. Personally, I have to stay under 30g per day and I have two meals per day so I try to have as few carbs as I can in my first meal so that I can, if I choose, have more in my second meal.

There's quite a bit of testing and tweaking needed when at first we go onto LCHF to see how we react to foods. This is why keeping a food diary is so helpful.
NB Remember that when we cut carbs we still need fuel so don't forget to raise the amount of healthy fats.

Celery, cauliflower, asparagus, spinach, green peppers,
Avocados, broccoli, okra, aubergines.
Celeriac lower carb than potatoes.

A (very) basic guide is that above ground veg are better than below ground veg for carb content. (which pretty much tallies with veggies mentioned above).

But obviously it is all dependent on how much of something you eat. Here's a useful visual guide:

I am really hoping that your partner gets a glucose meter - they are invaluable for knowing what foods work and what foods don't work in raising blood sugar levels. I spent a few months testing pretty much after every meal and have a fairly good idea about certain foods now. And have discovered I can actually eat a couple of small potatoes. Also a very small portion of the mash on top of a fish pie. Any more potato raises my numbers too high. But it's all individual to the person...

Yes we've ordered the code3 meter

There's a ton of good stuff on that diet doctor site Smallbrit recommends. You can have a jolly good look round the site without paying for membership - but I've been using their diet meal planner and find it worth the small subscription. I probably save the price of the subscription by using their shopping lists and not blundering about the supermarket. They've loads of explanatory films on diabetes/diet too.

The total number of carbs is 6.3g of carbs inc sugar. I would eat this no problem and have loads of vegetables with perhaps a couple of small potatoes whereas my husband would have it with as few veggies as I let him get away with but twice as many potatoes. However I tend to eat more carbs than many forum members - I eat as much in one meal as some allow themselves in a day. Once you have a meter and can test you will have more idea as to how different foods affect you.
