Ah, the protein question.
Yes, I bolus for protein, but only certain types. You may recall that I don’t eat mammal or bird meat, or cow dairy.
I don’t need to dose for the protein in eggs, plant protein or fatty fish like salmon, tuna, sardines etc.
I bolus for lean fish like prawns and white fish, at half the ratio I dose for carbs, but on an extended bolus. For example I had a fish pie thing (the filling without a mash on top) for dinner last night with roasted courgettes. The carb count was 9g, so I dosed 0.9u for that (I’m on a 1:10 ratio at dinner), as I sat down to eat. I don’t prebolus. For the protein, my meal had 68g, of which I estimated 40g was from white fish and prawns (I’d used a fish pie mix of salmon, haddock and cod, plus a seafood cocktail with prawns, squid & mussels), so I dosed 1:20 and took 2u over 2 hours. I was 5.5mmol at dinner and 6.7 two hours later, so had a correction dose of 0.3u then.
Some of my low carb T1 buddies have different ratios worked out for all different types of meat - check out the TypeOneGrit page on Facebook. We (mostly) follow the Bernstein recommendations of 30g carbs a day, it’s not a method for everyone, but it works really well for me - diabetically and mentally. I don’t have anxiety about hypos any more as I rarely have enough IOB to drop me very far.
@kitedoc - love those kites, mate!
In other news, had a call from the people doing the Cardiff University study, - so far I meet all the requirements, although my control might be a little TOO good

They’re going to get back to me on that - ideally they want HbA1c values to 50-75 because of the whole “if it’s low you must be having loads of hypos” trope. So I sent her a couple of 24h graphs from this week, and explained how I run my T1, so hopefully that’ll be ok. If this antibody works, and does actually regenerate some beta cells, then I can just knock my pump down a few notches.
