Hi everyone.

New to these forums, new to diabetes.

A little background to where I am now.

12 months ago I was admitted to hospital with a lung abscess, during the scan they found that I had chronic pancreatitis. Never had any symptoms to show I had. Was prescribed creons in which I take no set amount as it depends on what I am eating.

Moving on 12 months and just been diagnosed as type 3c. Doc has me on metformin. BG was 28.4, two days and it's up and down but no lower than 10.6 and so far no higher than 24.6.

One of my biggest symptoms was weight loss and now confused as it looks like I'm being treated as type 2 and I can't afford to lose anymore as I feel stick thin already.

Got a long wait to see the dietician and feel a tad lost as to what to eat. As my creon diet is at odds to the diabetes diet especially for bringing down my BG whilst trying to maintain and gain weight I need.

Anyway, that's me so far.

Are we talking GP here or endocrinologist? Have you had a C-peptide test to see how much insulin you're still making?

I was sent to A&E by GP practice nurse as I had a high ketone in urine. Blood and Urine test taken and admitted to Acute Medicine. Doc/Consultant on duty said it was diabetes and my HBa1c was very high. As I have chronic panc he said I was type 3c. The hospital started me off on metformin, GP today kept me on metformin but increased from 1 tab to 2 tabs.

No idea if I'm still producing insulin or if I've had a c-pep (is it a blood or urine check as hospital took both).

Getting blood test results from a hospital is like getting blood from a stone, even for GPs. The usual thing is just a letter explaining the diagnosis. Or at least this has been the case for me. However, the GP could at least ask for them. I do agree that you need to know which tests you had, and the results, so you can have the correct medication. Metformin on its own does very little to reduce blood sugar levels, and yours are high and need bringing down.

It would help with further replies and future posts if you could complete your profile settings and click the type of diabetes you have.

Thanks, I will speak to my GP once again and even though I'll understand what she will be saying I'll ask for it to be written down.

Day 2 of Metformin and BG is down to 9.6 after 1st tablet with breakfast and a steady walk afterwards. Had a very low carb lunch and it's not gone up much this afternoon.

I thought I had filled out my profile to show type 3c, I'll go check again.

Once again thanks for the replies.

You should be on a waiting list to see a specialist but this can take time. See if you can make an appointment with a diabetic nurse and/or a dietician in the meantime. They will actually be the people helping you with day to day management of your diabetes.
The consultants focus on test results and medication.

Thanks Kirktown,

Until next Monday when I can get to see the practice nurse and see where we go from there. Just now that I know and know how bad it had gotten, I suppose another few days won't do any harm. On a positive note, since finding out and using Metformin I've managed to get BG down to 8.2 (lowest) but up and down not drastically though up to 16. Yep this is high, but considering a few days ago my lowest was 28.4 I'm happy that it's coming down. Got a way to go to learn about carb numbers and sugar etc.
