Morning all, hope you're well!

One week ago i had a partial nail avulsion one the big toe of my left foot. They have used the chemical phenol to prevent the nail from regrowing. The surgery went well, i followed all the instructions and on Friday i had the first redressing in the clinic. Apparently the wound is healing good.

Since the day of the surgery seven days ago my glucose levels are totally erratic. I'm on a basal/bolus regime and in the last six month i had pretty good control. Suddenly i have hypos out of the blue, yesterday afternoon i crashed down to 1.9. Every night i have spikes up to 15 and wake up sweating and feeling very ill.

I really hope to get back the control very soon. Does anyone else have experience with problems after this surgery? I'm so concerned the wound won't heal properly. On top of everything the wound got wet this morning because for some strange reason the Aidapt waterproof cast leaked. The foot is now soaking in salt water as i'm typing.

I'm not sure i want the surgery on my other toenail now. It's scheduled for the 7th of May.

@enzina sorry to hear about the toenail surgery. I had both big toes done twice and of course they just got narrower. The medics then suggested removing them completely but that was a step too far for me. Then I found a health care practitioner specialising in feet who though hadnt been to medical schol had years of experience of dealing with foot problems in nursing homes. Well that was years ago and she somehow has teased my nails into growing properly. As long as she trims them, checks them every 6 weeks I havent had a problem for years.
Sorry cant advise re BG levels but it is a very invasive not to say painful procedure so I can well understand it might affect it. Best wishes.

The phenol should have no effect on bgl as it's wiped off after a certain amount of time, as far as I can remember the last time I had a partial removal it was after about five minutes.

Would the anaesthetic have an effect?

I had both big toes done a couple of years ago. What a pain!! But they had to be done.

At the time I was borderline prediabetic. And unaware of any consequential effects except of course for the hassle involved in the healing process.

I waited quite a number of months before having the second one done. The problem never goes away. Only gets worse, unfortunately.

Thanks everyone,
I don't think it's the anaesthetic because i had quite a few procedures and it has never affected me.

Today i had a bad hypo again when i was out with the dogs and noticed to my horror i forgot to top up the dextro energy tablets in my bag. So i had to go to the shop and buy some sweets. :joyful:
