Does heat affect your bgs?

Just wondering if other people experience higher bgs when they are hot.
Having got my numbers under control, I've been seeing them creep up these past few days, but they only seem elevated when I am feeling hot with the weather. As my temperature cools in the evening or when I first get up my numbers seem to revert to what I expect.

All very odd!

thanks,
David

Hiya david, YES it does with me definetely, I really dont do hot/warm weather at all. It knocks me sideways go so drained and weary . Test my BS and WHOOP up they go....! mid/high teens readings. I actually asked this question myself a few weeks back and got posts where others went 'hypo' lower with the heat. All confusing me :? , I actually eat less [salads lite bites] when warmer due to the heat makes me queasy, than cooler and logically expect BS to dip lower baffled to see mine rise up. Am high anyways but the fact they elevate like you say is a mystery to me. Anna.x :?

Hi Anna,

Well at least I'm not alone! Thanks for the response.
Just when I think I have this "thing" under control, stuff like this comes along to keep me on my toe lol. So glad I got my testing strips re-instated.

Well just tested now before eating, feeling cool and my number is 4.7, unlike earlier when I was hot before lunch and 7.9... you really couldn't make this stuff up!

thanks again,
David

You know, David, from 7.9 to 4.7 is nothing to worry about. I know we are given all sorts of ideals to aim for, but a fluctuation of 3.2 mmols is not really much more than any non-diabetic might get. By my reckoning, those are both fine readings. If your before meal test was over 10 and you usually get low 4s or 5s, then it might be worth a thought, but 7.9 is cool - even on a hot day. :) Don't sweat the small stuff they say, and it's not bad advice for us guys and gals or we'd all go crazy worrying about normal everyday wobbles.

And yes, the heat does seem to affect my BGs too. But I can't predict which way it will go. Usually down I think, but it's not something I've really looked at to try and predict. I'm sure I should have, but...

Drops me like a stone if i don't keep an eye on BG Levels

Hot weather can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia, but there are plenty of precautions you can take. Hyperglycaemia can also be a problem in hot weather. People with diabetes should test more regularly in hot weather and adjust their water/food or insulin levels accordingly

Going from a 7 to a 4 reading (approximised) and vice versa in a type 1 could be quite significant for a type 1 though (only writing from a type 1 experience).

Me personally as a type 1 have experienced large swings (prior to pump that I can adjust better) in my blood levels for heat....unfortunately mine always dipped significantly.......

Interesting to read that that type 2's can go higher, as mine as a type 1 always dipped significantly too much-the worst being last July when I almost lost my licence!!!

Hi Margi,

7.9 before lunch is very unusual for me. Given what I eat (and when) I would normally be in the 4.2-5.2 range.
I aim to stay under 10 at all times, but with 7.9 before lunch I certainly didn't manage that yesterday.

I'm not too stressed about it, just trying to understand what my body is doing... it's all fairly new to me to be honest. My numbers are certainly better than the over 20s I had when diagnosed in March :D

Well I am normally 6-6.8 fasting 5-6 throughout the day and 7.5 after food. Really sticking to LCHF but bs shot up. Bs at 9.1 now and that's 1 1/2 hours after food and an hours exercise! Has been high all week. Can't believe it. Plateaued last 2 weeks too!

Something is affecting my bgs. We've been out most of the day, at Morrisons stopped off for a bite. My bg was 11.3 - I've been holding it at 6 - 6.5.
When we got home, late afternoon, I found this morning's needle still on the table. Forgot to take this morning's insulin!

Still surprised at the figure. I've missed them before..

Yeah, hot weather affects me big time (type 1) ... I guess in a similar way to doing light exercise.

I think this is one of the things I find most challenging - it's not just about what I eat....

My BGs are also affected by:

- hot/ cold day
- busy/ easy morning commute (and whether I have to run for the train)
- how stressed out I am at work
- how much hard work I am doing (mentally as much as physically - I once worked out that a 3 hour exam was worth about a kit kat chunky)
- and probably whether there is an "r" in the month....

Anyone else find all of this?

Im glad i found this post coz this has been doing my head in. The last week my levels have gone up a little, i wake up fine on 5.7 but had my lunch earlier and im on 8 and i cant understand it im usually in mid 5s, the heat is deffo getting to me and to make matters worse my yearly review is next week and i think im DOOMED!!!

Completely the opposite, struggle to keep bg numbers up in this warm weather, hope it cools down soon

sorry, yeah I was perhaps a bit unclear.... I find I get low bg more frequently in hot weather.

Actually the worst for me is normally the first warm day in spring (after a run of cold weather). Almost a guaranteed hypo that morning....

Not only is my stupid bs up but I have put on 2lbs which I'm pretty sure is water retention as there is no reason for me to have put anyone! Am feeling most disgruntled! :(

Are you drinking enough in the warmer weather @skandichic?

Well I thought I was drinking more but ankles (or cankles as my hubbie calls them) are swollen. Drank couple of litres. Sports day today. Out on field all day - bliss. Had to teach sign language for 2 half hour slots at end of day so not ideal as kids wanting to go home. Had massive salad with salmon and glass of chilled white with coffee and 2 squares of dark choccie. Yum! Feel guilty about wine (small glass) ! Going for walk! Bs 7.8 not bad after food. It was 6.7 before I ate which is too high for me.

I've been melting at work today in the heat and felt high most of the day but sugars have ranged from 4.3 to 6.8 so found that a little odd, nice surprise when you think your a bit high, test and dread the result but get a lovely result :-)
