Hi,

Newly diagnosed type 2 on gliclazide BD. I am obese too.

I wanted to take a look at his books.. should I get the Diabetes Code or Obesity Code? Or are both worth a read?

I unsure if they duplicate information and the diabetes one may be preferable as that may be why I am obese?

Any opinions welcome :)

Yeah I'd definitely go for the "Diabetes Code" although when I started out it hadn't been published.
Also watch all his videos here
https://idmprogram.com/videos/

Like @Jim Lahey I credit the good Doc with saving my feet, eyes and life too.
I found the combination of intermittent fasting and an ultra low carb diet along with some extended fasting made huge changes to my overall health all for the better!

Thank you so much for your reply. That sounds fantastic and it’s obviously made such a change to your life.

Can I ask did you need to lose weight too and did this book help with that too or even just happen to be a happy side effect?

I weighed 23 stone at the time of diagnosis this morning was 14st 4 pounds.
Following the Fungsters methods should help with putting T2 into remission and significant weight loss, certainly did with me.

I see you’ve reversed your T2! That’s amazing! Well done and hopefully I can go some way to reversing mine :)

Any other good book recommendations are welcome.

Thanks but it was actually rather easy after having it all explained by Jason Fung. As far as other recommendations go, I’ve now read a total of 23 books on diabetes and general nutrition science. If I were you I’d just start with anything written or spoken by Fung :D

I will admit to never having read anything by JF, nor watched any of his videos, but I do have access to the thoughts of @bulkbiker which is the equivalent, and usually more concise.

I may other both obesity code and diabetes code then - it will probably be some duplicated info but I do need to get my knowledge up ;)

Oh wow! That is incredible! It’s been so hard for me to lose weight in the past - so much so I’m on an NHS programme working towards a gastric bypass :(

You’re such an inspiration! Well done!!

Worth adding that Fung is very easy to listen to. He narrates The Diabetes Code, so if you’re into that sort of thing, I recommend the audiobook.

Great tip! I find audio books with a good narrator send me to sleep, lol!

So I have just ordered the paperback on Amazon and can read the first chapter on my kindle. I do love a real book.

The only thing that disheartens me is I am on steroids too which increase BG despite my best food efforts :(

I'd give IF and ultra low carb a go first.. Follow a ketogenic way of eating by cutting almost all carbs out of your diet.
Give that 3 months and see how you get on.

Edit to add www.dietdoctor.com is also a great source of info.

Hello and welcome to the forum! A great place to start your journey, don’t you worry about that. You may find by adopting a low carb way of eating it may even help with some background health issues and not just diabetes. Hopefully the steroids can be discontinued sooner rather than later.

Like @britishpub I haven’t read the books myself but other members have got me up to date rather quickly on the concepts when I first joined and I have watched most of his videos as well as reading his Medium articles too. You’re in good hands and I’ve found in losing my weight that appetite control comes first which is something the Fungster does advocate quite a bit.

We are here to support you all the way, ask all the questions you want and we will cheer you on as much as we can.

The steroids thing is a bit of a bummer.. but at least you'll be doing your best to lower your blood sugars by diet so the sigars will likely be a lot lower than they would if you had done nothing.
Not sure about fasting and steroids..will you be on them for long?

Unfortunately I’m planned for a long term maintenance dose of 15-20mg daily. However at present I’m on 60mg per day as I’m in a flare right now. The 60mg will gradually reduce to 15-20mg by December providing my symptoms subside.

When first diagnosed a week ago in hospital I was around 17-26 permanently that was premedication and as I’d gone off my moderate/low carb diet for weight loss at the suggestion of ‘carbs with each meal’ by the diabetes specialist nurse :(

I am so relieved I found this site - you’re all amazing! Congratulations on your weight loss too @Caeseji - having been obese all my life, I can understand how hard it is so well done.

I wish the steroids could be stopped but it’s not possible at present. I have auto immune condition whereby my immune system attacks blood vessels in organs. At present mine attacks my bowel, eyes and kidneys. Leading to Stage 4 kidney disease, uveitis and IBS type symptoms. The steroids suppress the immune system to stop the damage and help with symptoms but cause high BG and can cause T2 diabetes but I already had that apparently.

My body needs a good talking to, lol!

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
I don't think you could ask for anyone better than Dr. Fung for helping you to fully understand Diabetes and Obesity and once you understand it is so much easier to tackle things. His analogies help you to 'visualise' what is going on.
