Does diabetes effect anyone’s sex life?

Hi Jed

Diabetes can effect your sex life as lack of energy and tiredness can be a factor. Men can also have trouble performing. It is quite common, although their is medication which can help. Always worth a chat with your health professional.

It affects all aspects of our lives, being prepared is as ever the key.

It’s not something that’s easy for a young man like myself to talk about but I have trouble and have hypos during sex and it’s starting to affect my relationship

You burn arround 100-300 calories in due course so using up the glucose. Either you can eat something keep hypos out or adjust your insulin. Will have to find ways around and not to get tied up due to Diabetes.

Why not eat something before, like you would before exercise?

Clinics (some, anyway) give us a rhyme in the U.K...

4 is the floor
5 to drive
6 for sex

Check your levels before you start, chuck down a dextrose tablet or two if you’re a little low and keep your CGM display live on your phone where you can keep half an eye on it :)

Eat before, have glucose next to the bed (or wherever you are). Going to tag some of the T1 guys who may have top tips for keeping things running smoothly

Try not to be embarrassed

Another poster said his levels had come down after a 40 minute ‘ride in the bedroom’ I didn’t think it was a very nice way to talk about his partner! (He actually meant on his stationary bike!) oops.

Let’s just say it does my libido no harm knowing it also reduces my blood sugar level somewhat But as a T2 that’s not worrying. In your situation I’d happily indulge in chocolate spread & baileys ‘to prevent a hypo’ (sadly as a T2 that’s had to stop)

You’re young & in your prime, don’t let T1 stop you fully enjoying sex . Test, add chocolate (or sugar/carb of choice) if you’re low and get on with enjoying yourself!!

I've been doing the 5:2 diet. On 800 calorie days my blood sugar regularly drops to just over 4 at minimum to 5.5 (I'm type 2 on Metformin). I haven't noticed any particular issues with this personally and don't particularly suffer from fatigue etc.

I'm curious to know what a reasonable level of blood sugar is as i seem to differ from other.

PS: I was diagnosed 8 months ago with very high blood sugar.

Sounds like you're doing very well!
But yours is a completely different situation from Jed's, who is a type 1 on insulin.

As for your question, I think you'd better put it in a new thread, as the answer is different for T2's on metformin than for T1's (go to 'forums', choose the forum you want to post in and click on the green 'post new thread' button on the top).
Good luck!

Hi @Jed.s ,

Diabetes affecting sex life... Thanks for the tag @Diakat . :banghead:;)

Thinking back a number of years...
Wow, what can I say.. Been "caught out" a few times, not just with hypos.. A partner's ex boy friend showed up once proclaiming undying love which killed ours.
Another's' flat mate knocked on my room door at a party we "retired" from at mine needing the keys to theirs..
Lol, I was courting a stable hand once & a farmer strolled in...

Sex isn't like the portrayals in the "adult industry." Lol, it's more like a French farce sometimes. A good sense of humour helps.
It is meant to be fun.. Or an expressin of love. Both parties are meant to be respectful of the other. (It works both ways.)

So, where are your issues, is it just the hypos? (Yep, disappointing when it happens & will take the wind out of the sails. On any occasion.)
You had a thread regarding alcohol? Which can affect the will to perform as well as causing rapid drops in BG whilst on insulin.. There was a mention from you regarding "weed?" Sorry buddy, that can cause a loss of interest pretty quickly no matter how loveley the object of desire... Out can affect differen genders differently, so can amphetimine based drugs...

I commiserate & empathise that at your age it is difficult to talk. Partners at the same age tend to have similar issues with their own "hang ups." You are all young & meant to be having no fuss fun.. Nah, big expectations. You'll all work it out.

The reality sometimes....??!!! it's an "experiment" & so it is as we get older...

So now I'm middle aged & married.. My wife has the same privelidge these days..She's "the one..." (No doubt either way.) Hypos for me still can happen. The "planets" don't align all the time as the porn industry with it's agenda leads us all (whatever gender.) to believe...

That's my two cents..

I've never dealt with sex like I'm about to get behind the wheel of a car... @Mel dCP .Sex never potentially killed a school bus que of kids... A condom at least, stopped them being mine. ;)

What can I say. It's all as it ever was, "complicated." But still fun for both of us....

Like a "boy scout" at the time... I carried a Durex, but was never so bold or confident enough as a diabetic as to carry my Glargine... Lol. This was the 1980s needles, sex & AIDS... My mum was pretty clued up in the "day."

Well me neither tbh! I only heard the sex bit of that rhyme the other day :D But if hypos are an issue for our young friend, it might be a good guideline to run with for now.
