Have been newly diagnosed with type 1 and one of the first things I was told was to report health changes to the DVLA and DWP etc.

Now I already suffer from depression as it is but the last thing I needed was to have my License Revoked!

They wanted 3 months of resting results from my glucometre... How am I supposed to do that in the first place?

I didn't even read everything, just sent my license back because at this point have had enough.

Hi @Razzamuffin ,

Firstly, the licence. Back in my day all they wanted to know intially was am I hypo aware. Are my eyes good.
This was way back in 1986?

The longest licence DVLA give on health grounds & fitness to drive is 3 years.. Pretty every 3 years since then I've been sent a DIAB1 form from DVLA to fill out & they check in with my health team.

As long as I've not needed "third party help" with lows. (Ambulanced.) all good. Telling someone to "pass the jelly babies" doesn't count as needing "help." ;)

You are required more recently on the form to sign that you will check bloods prior to getting behind the wheel & driving, then every two hours on the road... More recently reading from a Libre sensor are acceptable means of checking BG.

I empathise that these forms can be daunting. I'm no massive fan on filling them out myself..

I feel you may have been a little rash by just sending the licence back?

Best wishes.

For Group 1 Drivers (car or motorcycle drivers), this form has to be filled in (either online or on paper, if downloaded and printed out) https://assets.publishing.service.g...ta/file/778827/diab-medical-questionnaire.pdf

It's only Group 2 drivers (bus and lorry drivers) who need to provide 3 months of glucose readings:-

How the DVLA checks diabetes management requirements for insulin-treated Group 2 bus and lorry licensing

The DVLA takes the following measures to ensure the requirements are met for licensing of insulin-treated Group 2 bus and lorry drivers:
■ requires the applicant’s usual doctor who provides diabetes care to undertake an annual examination including review of the previous 3 months of glucose meter readings
■ arranges an examination to be undertaken every 12 months by an independent consultant specialist in diabetes if the examination by their usual doctor is satisfactory
■ at the examination, the consultant will require sight of blood glucose self-monitoring records for the previous 3 months stored on the memory of a blood glucose meter

I was a little rash. They just revoked the HGV and Bus provisional entitlements not happy but am happy I can drive normally though. Heard alot of stories of diabetics losing licenses for good because of EU laws.

Funny enough, I've had to jump through some hoops with a "vision field test" after some succesful eye treatment, on the last recent renewal...
As long as one meets the criteria for hypo awareness & sight. (If one needs glasses? Wear em.)

Interestingly regarding EU laws.. I got done for speeding in France last year. The fine was €38? (Just a tad over the limit..)

The points. As the French would say if they were awarding the UK in a song contest.
Nil..

Not as harsh as over here! ;)

They don’t normally revoke car licenses you just have to inform them and self certify and the will issue a 3 year license

As you have returned your license it is probably considered that you have surrendered it so will probably have to apply for it back

I would personally phone the DVLA and see how they suggest you proceed and what forms you need to complete they will probably even post them to you. Shouldn’t take too long

My guess is you’ve had lorry/bus entitlement revoked? As did I, they don’t consider anything it’s just revoked straight away. You need to provide 3 months of continues sugars minimum of 2x daily. Let your diabetic nurse know so they can line you up with a consultant appointment. You can start applying for it back after 1.5 months from revoke date as it takes soo long to process it will be 3 months before it’s reviewed and medical done. This will then have to be renewed every 12 months by providing 3 months of 2x daily readings. Hope this helps! currently going through the same myself!

Best thing phone DVLA ask what the want you todo... and do it

If it is a class 2 license they will want 3 months bg’s then you can’t do anything until you have that

They will want a full 3 months

Ie minimum 2 tests a day
Test every 2 hours for driving including car

If you don’t have group 2 then they would only require notifying
